Gabriel Bizen Akagawa 

Gabriel Bizen Akagawa is an Assistant Adjunct Professor at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Born in Minnesota, Gabe has lived in Chicago since 2000.  He produces site, situation and socially specific artworks. Gabe was awarded Artist-in-Residencies at the Alternator Gallery for Contemporary Art in Kelowna, British Columbia, at Crabtree Farm in Lake Bluff, Illinois, and at Ox-Bow in Saugatuck, Michigan. His past curatorial projects include a changing series he initiated in 2005 called “Faketure” (fake nature). He created the “Foundry Tree” web project documenting and connecting cast iron artists worldwide. His art practices are situated as medicinal activities to investigate humanity's complex relationship with “nature.” These works embrace repurposing materials through crafting and invention. Gabe’s many hats include woodworker, metal caster, teacher, spouse, father, and year-round bicycling enthusiast.
