Clerihan Notes - 19th July 2014

Clerihan ladies club have been busy for the last 2 weeks and it wasn't all playing football. U10's and U8's each hosted a blitz with local teams attending.

On July 9th the club organised a one mile challenge for 6-16 year olds. 84 young people took the challenge and were rewarded with a snack at the finish. They also received a certificate with their own finishing time on it. Thanks to Niall O'sullivan who brought his big clock and years of running club experience to help us run a very enjoyable evening.

Then on Friday July 18th we had our second annual 5 mile challenge in association with Clonmel athletics club. Over 270 people ran the challenging course and came back to the hall for refreshments. It takes a huge amount of organising to make sure this event runs smoothly and we must thank the men and women in the community who helped with stewarding and with the refreshments. Nicola Maunsell, Ollie McGee and Mark Corcoran are the real driving force behind this run and put in a lot of work behind the scenes. Sarah Whelan had the thankless job of recording all entrants to allow the results come out in a timely manner, the club would like to thank her for her hard work.

On Saturday 19th the U12s travelled to Mungret for the munster blitz and played Adare, Templemore and Listowel. It was a great days football.

U8/10's are attending a blitz in Moyle Rovers on Wednesday 23rd and U12's are due to play Ardfinnan on Thurs 24th July.

This week sees cul camp in the village and over 100 have registered. Let's hope the weather stays dry.

U16's win Mary and Molly Tournament. Well done to our Under 16s who brought home the Mary and Molly cup as Tournament winners last Saturday in Abbeyside. Seven teams competed for the trophy which commemorates the memories of Mary and Molly Cusack of Abbeyside Ladies Football club. Our day began with an opening game against Bride Rovers of Cork. We won this game 1-4 to 0-1. Next up were Ballymacarbery and again our girls were victorious, holding the opposition scoreless while our girls scored 2-2. The final Group game was against Dungarvan and we were behind at half time but asserted control in the second half and emerged victorious by 1-5 to 0-3. As group winners we met Abbeyside in the semi final .We had a comfortable win to advance us to the final against neighbours Fethard who has also had an unbeaten run to the final. Played in a fantastic competitive and sporting manner Fethard had the upper hand in the opening exchanges. Our girls fought very hard and were duly rewarded when a deceptive shot wound up in the net. This goal settled Moyle Rovers and we went on to win 1-4 to 0-1. Just reward for our girls who worked hard and played honestly in every game of the tournament and were the only team to return home unbeaten during the course of a thoroughly enjoyable day. Captain Shania Dowling accepted the Cup on behalf of a very tired but extremely happy team. Our Thanks to Abbeyside Ladies Football club and the Cusack and Walsh families who organised the Tournament. Thanks to all who supported us on the day. Our Under 12 girls were in action this weekend with a challenge match against the Nire in Ballymacarbury on Sunday. Playing against the wind in the first half our girls fought valiantly but at half time our opposition were ahead. The girls came into their own in the second half with Robyn Tynan scoring two points and Sarah O'Connor's adding another point. Some hard work from our backs and mid field brought the ball up to Dearbhla McDonagh who deftly put the ball in the back of the net. It wasn't enough to put us ahead though and the Nire came out the winners on the day. Team: Eimear Mc Keown, Sophie Tomlin, Grace Quinn, Rachel O'Connor, Grainne McEntagart, Alana Dowling, Michelle Cronin, Claire Moylan, Kate Moore, Sarah O'Connor, Lucy Holohan, Robyn Tynan, Ella O'Keeffe, Dearbhla McDonagh, Ellie Devaney, Emma Bates
