It’s getting to the business end of the hurling championship season as this weekend sees the two quarter-final clashes take place. There are two very interesting games in store and the clash of Cork and Kilkenny will be eagerly anticipated. Will we see Kilkenny vacate the championship at their earliest stage since 1997 or will this be the win that finally kick-starts their season,
or will we see a young Cork team
that has progressed steadily finally take a big scalp to give themselves
renewed confidence? One of these outcomes will occur and the reaction
to this game will be thorough for both sides regardless of result.
Kilkenny have had a below par championship season so far. On many
occasions I have written about the potential decline and the reality
that they are not the same team as they were a few years ago but they
still remain in a position to defend their All-Ireland title. Their win
over Offaly exposed weaknesses as they conceded four goals.
performances against Dublin saw them eliminated from the Leinster
championship and having won thirteen out of fourteen Leinster titles
between 1998 and 2011, they now have gone two consecutive seasons
without the Bob O’Keefe Cup.
Entering the qualifiers they were paid against their greatest rivals,
Tipperary, in possibly the most eagerly anticipated championship clash
of all time, outside of an All-Ireland final.
It was the best Kilkenny performance of the year when they beat Tipperary and the general consensus was that this would be a new beginning for their 2013 season. The following clash with Waterford proved to be the opposite, asking even more questions about the potential fortunes of Kilkenny. They were very poor. Even though they performed well in extra time they will need to play a lot better against Cork.
