Biography

Ms. Wu is a classically trained pianist, music instructor, voice coach, and piano accompanist. She is one of the directors of the Music Teachers’ Association of California (MTAC). She was trained by primarily four well-known pianists and pedagogues: Professors Edmund Battersby, Edward Auer, Vitaly Margulis, and Antoinette Perry. She earned music degrees at the Shandong University School of Fine Arts in China and at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University. She currently holds a Master of Music degree in Piano Performance at UCLA, and has achieved many awards and and high GPA for her performance and academic excellence.

With more than ten years of teaching experience, Amy has enthusiastically trained her students in performance, music theory, ear training, and sight-reading from beginner to advanced levels, as well as preparing many of them for prestigious music schools. Her students have participated in honor recitals and state convention recitals, and have been award recipients at MTAC branch festivals(such as Bach competition), school scholarships (such as LACESMA) and competitions(Such as New Star Competition). Her teaching philosophy is to inspire and encourage students to enhance their ability to explore their musical creativity and expression in the art form of playing piano, help them to share their music with others, or enjoy it as an emotional self-expression.

Besides private instruction, Amy also serves as a piano accompanist and voice coach at West Los Angeles College. She accompanies voice students in classes and recitals, as well as coach them individually to improve their vocal skills, interpretation, sight-reading, and harmony. Her repertoire ranges from Italian art songs to modern Broadway and Musical Theater songs.

Yawen was born in Jinan, China. Her father is also a famous musician who specializes in vocality. She began piano lesson at the age of five. At the age of 6, she won the first prize at the Jinan Piano Competition and performed her first public recital. One year later, She was ranked first in the piano performance exam for the entrance to the elementary school affiliated with the Shandong Arts College, which trains young children for music careers. In 2002, she was one of the 30 applicants out of 700 to be admitted to the School of Fine Arts at Shandong University. Her academic courses and piano performance was ranked 1st out of 30 upon graduation, and her graduation thesis won the top thesis award in the music department of Shanong University. Due to Yawen's outstanding performance both in piano and academic courses, she was admitted directly to graduate school without exam by graduate committee. In summer session, She also went to the Shanghai Conservatory of Music and studied the piano with Prof. Zhou Wei, and work analysis with Prof. Qian Yi-Ping. Yawen won many top awards at various competitions. She has well-rounded music education, besides piano performance, she also studied music theory , sightsinging, ear training, chorus, vocal, conduction, music history, harmony, composition, counterpoint, and orchestration in music school.
