Furong Huang



My research interests include machine learning, high-dimensional statistics and distributed algorithms.


I enjoy both the theoretical analysis and practical implementation of spectral algorithms for latent variable graphical models. 


Applications include text and image mining, community detection in social networks and cell type detection using in situ hybridization brain images in computational biology.

Research Interests

My research focus on spectral methods (matrix and tensor decompositions) on latent variable graphical models (such as latent dirichlet allocation, mixtures of graphical models, hidden markov model) on distributed systems with large scale data. Some of my previous works involve distributed spectral decomposition techniques for topic modeling and community detection for large scale networks with extension to temporal dynamic networks.  

I am also interested in optimization of large scale numerical algebraic operations and distributed computing and systems. Implementation-wise, I worked on distributed implementation of alternating minimization for tensor decomposition on the cloud, fast GPU implementation of stochastic gradient descent methods for tensor decomposition and so on. 

Another thread of my research lies in computational biology. Generally I am interested in applying machine learning techniques to guide biological experiments. I worked on modeling transcriptional factors using microarry gene expression levels data and cell type detection of mouse brains
