13 Totara Tree
Next to the stream is a large example of a native podocarp tree - the totara, (Podocarpus totara).
These trees are widespread over the North Island, wherever native bush still flourishes. They are also quite common as specimen trees in gardens, either from intended plantings or from being left in situ whenever land is developed.
While the age of our tree has not been determined, it is certain that it has been there since before the land was first developed in the middle of the 19th Century.
