The Friends of the Florence Stockade
The Friends of the Florence Stockade (FFS) is an 501(c) (3) organization dedicated to the preservation of the site of the Civil War prison known as the Florence Stockade and its history. The FFS owns approximately 60% of the Stockade site as well buffering property. A quarterly newsletter is published and is available to FFS members. Charles Brandegee (Brand) Livingstone, the grandson of Florence Stockade prisoner Charles Brandegee, 5th N.Y. Volunteers (Duryée Zouaves) 146th N.Y. Volunteer Infantry, spearheaded the founding of our organization and served as its first chairman.
Educational and Preservation Efforts of the F.F.S.
On Memorial Day, 1998, the Friends of the Florence Stockade dedicated a historical marker at the Florence National Cemetery. The marker is located between the rows of unmarked graves containing approximately 2,300 Union soldiers who died at the Florence Stockade during its five months of existence. In cooperation with the Old Darlington District Chapter of the South Carolina Genealogical Society, we are attempting to identify the approximate 2300 unknown Union soldiers buried in the Florence National Cemetery.
Please join this important historic preservation effort and an important part of South Carolina's history. John L. Andrews, Jr., Treasurer - JAndr45985@aol.com , 307 Kings Place, Hartsville, SC, 29550-4053.
