The Friends in Need Food Shelf, started in 1992, is a community funded food shelf and we are a nonprofit 501(c)3 corporation.  The Friends in Need Food Shelf serves the residents of Cottage Grove, St. Paul Park, Newport and Grey Cloud Island. Anyone living in these four communities is eligible to come to the food shelf.

This past year we distributed over one and a half million pounds of food and toiletries to over 37,000 people.

Did you know?  Your $50 contribution will provide 180 meals to families, seniors or children at risk of hunger in our community.  You can help us in ending hunger.

Friends in Need relies heavily upon generous and dedicated volunteers to sort and stock donations and serve our clients. We only have one employee and everyone else is a volunteer, which truly makes this an outstanding organization.  This past year our volunteers donated over 13,000 hours of time.

Client comments:

“On behalf of my family, words cannot express how grateful we are for your kindness and generosity!  Always the donor to charity organizations, it was very awkward to reach out for help.  It took all the courage I could muster to make that 1st phone call in December.  During my visit, the volunteers made me feel so welcomed.  Every time I visit I can’t help the tears from flowing but it’s not about our difficult financial situation anymore, it is about being overwhelmed by kindness, encouragement and being truly blessed by having this resource in our community.  From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for everything!  God bless all of you!”

“Thanks to all the Food Shelf volunteers for all you do.  I appreciate that you understand and treat with dignity those of us experiencing financial hardship.  May God bless you.”

“I have tried to find the right words for weeks to describe my thankfulness to you for all you have done for my husband and me.  We are forever grateful.  We have worked very, very hard all of our married life, but because of loss of job and a surgery I had, we had so many reversals.  I never dreamt in a hundred years that we would be coming to Friends in Need.  I wish I was in a position to pay you back.  A simple thank you is so inadequate for all you have done.”
