Undergraduate Summer 2017 Research Positions
We seek two motivated undergraduate students interested in gaining research experience in plant ecology as part of a research team investigating the energy and nutrient budgets of plant species in a long-term climate change experiment. The research is part of a study that examines the influence of climate change on grassland vegetation in northern England. Undergraduate projects will be based in Syracuse and will examine the impact of two decades of experimental drought and warming on plant energy budgets, including how these factors alter the interaction of plants and soil microbes. Activities will depend on the interests of the students but will likely involve greenhouse plant propagation, laboratory gas exchange measurements, plant tissue analyses of energy and nutrient content, and soil microbial measurements. Students will be provided with a $5000 stipend for living expenses over the 12-wk duration starting May 15. For students enrolled at Syracuse University or SUNY-ESF, there is also an opportunity to continue work on the project as an independent study (for credit) over the Fall 2017 semester and potentially beyond. Relevant experience and ecology- or plant biology-related coursework is desirable but not required. Students graduating in spring 2017 are not eligible.

Undergraduate research in the Fridley lab could take a number of forms, including field surveys, experiments, simulation modeling, and database analysis. Information on current projects in the Fridley lab is available at our homepage. Interested undergraduate students should be prepared to dedicate at least two semesters to their research project, should have strong quantitative skills, and should be eager to immerse themselves in the scientific literature. Interested students should contact Jason to discuss potential research projects.
