The King Charles

Very sad news about Paul Middleton landlord @ The King Charles Pub

I received an email from Bill (who worked at The King Charles) on August 22nd to say that Paul had died on Sunday 19th August. Paul had been ill a couple of weeks before and died suddenly on the Sunday evening (ironically a Freeplay night).

It came as a big shock to those of us who knew Paul and I still cannot believe it has happened. From day one Paul understood and embraced the Freeplay community spirit and warmly welcomed us every 3rd Sunday consistently for several years no matter what. Even on the coldest of days when snow kept people away from the quay Paul had a warm fire glowing for us all and Freeplay still happened. Paul will be sadly missed and I for one will continue to remember him and Bill with gratitude and affection. A special thought for Paul and his partner Bill…their hospitality and kindness to Freeplay is much appreciated, sharing their time freely at every sessionin their great atmospheric pub. Paul’s funeral was with his family in Shropshire if anyone wants to pass on condolences to Bill and family please email to me and I will forward to Bill. Send to marylyncropley@googlemail.com Thank you.

Remembering Paul…special words from Alan from the band Lost@Sea…“I will always remember and cherish his unfailing belief in both my Band, and myself. Paul always had a positive take on circumstances and anyone who ever met him will forever be richer simply by having met him...however briefly.”  (Alan Hunter)

From Marylyn

Very sad news...due to circumstances beyond their control the King Charles pub is closed and Paul and Bill are no longer there :(

I thank them from the bottom of my heart for their kindness, generosity and support to Freeplay over the years and wish them well with many happy days ahead.

The music and the magic still flows and a very special thank you also to Taff, landlord Nicholas Ward and Seonagh @ The Spotted Cow on the quay for offering Freeplay a new home...we will be there 20 May (and every 3rd Sunday as usual) 7-9pm with Taff's guitar workshop happening after @ 9pm.

Freeplay Ezine out soon if you want to be on our mailing list please let Pete know (pdfreeplay@live.co.uk) please let anyone you know who may be interested in Freeplay re change of venue...cheers Mx

Freeplay is held at the King Charles Inn, great venue in one of the most atmospheric pubs in Poole with dedicated music area upstairs (plus PA) and supportive, artistic management.

Situated in Thames Street the King Charles is reputedly one of the oldest pubs in Poole. The building it self has a fine Tudor frontage through which the door leads to a warm and cosey snug where the original fireplace remains.

The medieval hall is even earlier and was once part of the town cellars and prison. The beam from which hangings took place is still in evidence.

The pub is haunted by the ghost of Emily, a former landlady who took her own life under the belief that her husband, (the Privateer Harry Payes' brother) had been lost at sea.
