                                               The Aylwin's of Romsey

Notes to the Aylwin’s of Romsey Tree

May 2009 Correspondence with an Aylwin researcher in England

Below is part of an email I received in 2009 from an Aylwin researcher in England:

"... We have searched all the registers in Romsey and surrounding areas and have found no baptisms of Hester, Susanna, Thomas, Obadiah, or William so we think they must have been non-conformists for which no registers have survived."

"... We know that Hester (in particular) was living in Middlebridge Street, Romsey because we have a copy of her will written in 1814 and she died in 1818. She mentions, in order in the will, sister Susanna Aylwin, niece Mary Wright Helby (the wife of Joseph Helby), Thomas Aylwin (nephew of city of Quebec merchant, nephew William Plyer (of Romsey baker), brother Obadiah Aylwin (of Quebec merchant). Mary Wright Helby (nee Aylwin) was baptised in London in 1770 the daughter of William and Mary. The fact that William Aylwin (father of Mary Wright Aylwin) and Thomas Aylwin (born in 1729) are not mentioned leads us to believe that they died before 1814. We have yet to find the connection between Hester and William Plyer although there is a will of a John Waldron mentioned in Hester's will that leaves his estate to Hester and Susannah Aylwin and his "kinsman" William Plyer and others. John Waldron also left money to the non-conformist minister so I assume that the Aylwin's, Waldron's, and Plyer's were all non conformist as there are few entries for those surnames in the C of E Registers."

Mention of William Plyer, baker; son of Mary Aylwin and William Plyer, 1800

On Monday evening, in consequence of the people of this neighbourhood having an idea that bread was to be advanced in price, they came in from the country in large parties, and, after parading the streets, began to destroy the Bakers' windows. The destruction, for a few minutes, was very great. Mr. Arnold's windows and frames, together with those of Mr. Plyer, were demolished almost in an instant, and the town was in the greatest alarm and distress imaginable; but by the timely assistance of a troop of the 15th Light Dragoons tranquility was soon restored, and some of the principals seized and sent to prison.
