Bio – Darren Rist, Fly Fishing Guide, River Rapture Fly Fishing

Some of my fondest childhood memories are of fishing with my father and brothers. I’ve always loved trout fishing, but it wasn’t until my first year in college that I caught the flyfishing bug. I spent many painstaking hours deciding whether to go to my morning engineering classes at NJIT or the ‘entomology classes’ on one of the many trout rivers in Northern NJ. (The latter usually won out). In 2003 I found myself wanting more than just a career in engineering, so I decided to buy my first drift boat and began guiding part time on the fabled rivers of the Catskills and Upper Delaware. Being a flyfishing guide has enabled me to blend my love of the outdoors, travel, photography, birding, teaching and of course, fly fishing. In addition to guiding, I offer fly casting and tying instruction and am a past president of the North Jersey Chapter of Trout Unlimited. To learn more about my guided fly-fishing trips, you can reach me at dprist@earthlink.net.

Summer President Message & Banquet Update

posted Jun 29, 2020, 11:20 AM by Michael Iris

Hello Everyone!  Hoping everyone is safe and healthy!  Below is the President’s message!

April State Council meeting Update:

Marsha Benovengo is the newly elected state chair for NJ. She will finish Ron's Vacarro's term due to his vacancy and then still has 2 terms left if she so chooses. Ron is thinking more about replacing Kelly Buchta as NLC once her term is up at the end of the year.  Other openings on the council are the Membership slot, Veterans Services and Youth Education if anyone is interested, let me know and we can talk to Marsha about the position

The zoom meeting ran for about 3 hours with 6 Chapters represented (23 people) so there were some communication issues with one person controlling the meeting mute button and half not having video but we muddled through it. Jennifer Orr- Greene National TU Eastern Policy Director gave a talk about ideas to recruit members during the COVID outbreak. She did mention that Chris Woods has offered for front line responders and hospital personnel a years membership for free  so if you know of any that might be interested in joining TU for free for the first year let them know about this offer

Keith Fritschie talked for a few minutes about a few topics including Flatbrook, although nothing can be done yet as all the State parks are closed. He's been modeling floods and water flows and his initial assessment is that only 8% of the 158 stream crossing we did during the field assessment phase needed to be removed or replaced. Also talked briefly about some other projects down the road. Once were all cleared to meet again I will invite him to our chapter meeting so he can go over the project and what and were our help will be needed

John Montefusco talked about the Weis Dam removal on the South Branch right above Shannon's Fly Shop. The County has given this property to the town of Califon and most of the work to remove the dam is complete including State permits. The final issue in the Environmental assessment needs to be completed and the cost is $10,000  John has asked both the council and NJ Chapters to help with the costs. The goal is to have funding by June 1st and have the dam out this summer, hopefully in August. Two points of interest; one, this opens up about .7 tenths of a mile of public water and two, if TU can pull this off this year it will help with the big dam removal below Shannon's which will have a huge benefit on the waters in Ken Lockwood Gorge. At the board meeting earlier this month via Zoom, is was recommended and approved to contribute $1,000.00 to this cause

Lastly, we have unfortunately decided to cancel the 2020 Banquet.  It was a difficult decision to make.  We are giving everyone options.  You can donate 100%, 75%, 50%, 25%, or 0% of what you paid to North Jersey Trout Unlimited.  If you do decide to make a donation, please know that we really appreciate your support. If you have any questions, please email Tom Mount at tumount@comcast.net

Stay safe, stay healthy and get out and do some fishing!

All for now,

John

Postponement of the Banquet

posted Mar 13, 2020, 9:22 AM by Michael Iris

Due to the current situation with the Corona-virus and potential health and confinement issues we are all facing the Board has regretfully decided to postpone the 2020 Annual TU Banquet. We will be attempting to reschedule with Farmstead Country Club for a new date and once we know the new date we will let you all know through emails, the website, Facebook as well as issuing a new postcard through the USPS.

In addition, the chapter meeting scheduled for March 18th has  been cancelled as well. Keep checking for emails as the April meeting could very well be impacted too.

Please share this info with everyone that you can as not all our members and guest will have access to this message. Keep checking for updates on email and the web page. I will try to keep everyone updated as best we can during the current situation.

Stay Healthy

Notes from the President – February 2020

posted Feb 19, 2020, 6:38 AM by Michael Iris

Just a few notes to keep you all involved with what’s going on;

First off just a reminder that we are trying to have another Swap meet at the February meeting, we will have tables set up around the room and you can come early and claim a spot to put out whatever you bring to sell, trade or give away. We can leave it out throughout the meeting so there will be time to see what you have to offer prior to the start of the meeting, during the quick coffee break after the guest speaker and after the meeting is over.

The guest speaker for this month’s meeting is Bob Ramano and he will be talking about Fishing in Maine

You should have all received the Postcard in the mail for the annual Banquet by now, please note the change in location Farmstead Country Club in Lafayette this year, the date is March 21st

The next event coming up is thee Ramsey Outdoor Cast and Blast on February 22nd. We will need some help in our booth that day, if interested let one of the Board members know on Wednesday night. It’s a good day and worth the drive over to walk around and see the different exhibitors they’ve assembled for the day

After that we have March Madness on March 7th at a new location, it being held at the Cranford Community center 220 Walnut Ave, Cranford NJ from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. Last year was the first time there were tiers from every NJTU Chapter tying, is a great event for a good cause and I would like to have our chapter were well represented.

Flatbrook Project update: TU National has filled Cole Baldino’s position, his name is Keith Fritschie, we have met him at the NJTU State Council meeting in January and he attended the NNJTU Board meeting 2 weeks ago were we all got to meet and talk with him as well. Keith is planning on attending the March Chapter meeting and introducing himself to the chapter and talk some on the status of the Flatbrook Culvert project , the way forward and most importantly what and how we can help.

The Somerset Fly show was scheduled for January 24th – 26th thanks to all that helped at the show with the coverage of our booth and selling the Raffle tickets for the Fly Box, which by the way ahs 1050 flies in it this year as well as the One  Man Pontoon boat tickets too. Tickets for this will be available at the meeting, $5 per ticket and at the Banquet too.

The February annual Fly Tying classes have been cancelled this year, low sign up numbers. If anyone is really interested I would suggest coming out to the monthly Fly Tying round tables. There are always a group of tiers there willing to help.

All for now,

John
