Märchen

The Brothers Grimm, Jacob (1785-1863) und Wilhelm (1786-1869) were scholars who are most well known for their contributions to the written word by collecting and organizing a set of 210 fairy tales. The collection in German is called Kinder- und Hausmärchen

Reading the Märchen 

It is important to remember that these tales were written around 200 years ago, so while your German language skills are pretty good and will only get better in this unit, the authentic/original texts still may be difficult. Just imagine reading 200 year old English...

Tenses

Just like most stories in English, these stories are written in the past tense. In this unit we will be learning the past tense to be able to effectively read some fairy tales.
