It is an impressive start to the campaign for Mauricio Pochettino's side, who finished 11th last term, but life could get a bit tougher for the Barcelona-based outfit in the near future.
In their next nine games they must face Europa League holders Atletico three times - twice in the cup - as well as local rivals Barca, Valencia, Sevilla and Athletic Bilbao.
It is a testing fixture list, but Callejon is up for the challenge, saying: "We are all eager for the games against the big sides to arrive, it's something that always motivates you a lot.
"They are the most difficult clashes and in those we will see if we can continue at the top. We hope to continue being the surprise team and if possible, do it by winning at the Vicente Calderon."
Much of Espanyol's success so far has come at home, where they are one of only two teams still boasting a 100% record along with leaders Real Madrid after winning six out of six.
On their travels the Catalan outfit have been much less convincing, picking up just four points and one goal in six games.
Nevertheless, Callejon insists they deserve to be where they are in the standings, saying: "We are fourth and they have to respect us because we've earned it.
"We want to go out to win so that people are aware that we are a serious team, because some think we are up there by accident."
Looking ahead to the Atletico clash, the former Real Madrid youngster added: "They are one of the best teams in the league, they are very attacking. We must be very focused."
