Welcome to the Fox Valley Bat Detectives website!

The Fox Valley Bat Detectives is a collaborative citizen scientist program engaging volunteers in collecting acoustic monitoring data of threatened bat populations. After a successful pilot program at Heckrodt Wetland Reserve in 2011, the project has been expanded to include five other sites in Wisconsin's Fox Valley area...

I've got another full week of bat maps for all of you this week!  We had beautiful weather for monitoring and even had an extra night on Friday because of a special program with a group of South Korean students!

For those of you unfamiliar with the maps that I make, the blue lines represent the route we take at each site and the red dots are where we saved bat call files (aka heard bat activity)!

Summer 2014: Week 7 Maps

We've been on a roll with all of this great data we have been collecting!  And we even had an extra night at Appleton Memorial Park!  Though we no longer monitor there regularly, we hope to keep up some data collection there despite the end of our partnership with the Gardens of the Fox Cities.

Summer 2014: Week 6 Maps

Another full week of bat monitoring! With the exception of Monday, last week remained rather cool, though the bats still seemed to be out and about despite this infamous summer "polar vortex"!

Summer 2014: Week 5 Maps

Perhaps for the first time this summer, I have a full week of maps for you to look at!  Though the weather was a bit on the cool side, we had clear, rain-free nights ideal for listening to bats!

July 16 - Bubolz Nature Preserve

July 17 - High Cliff State Park

For those of you who regularly follow these posts, you may notice that this map looks a lot different than the other ones I've posted of our surveys at High Cliff.  Due to the physically challenging hike up and down from the Niagara escarpment, it was difficult to recruit volunteers to monitor there.  Instead, this new route avoids hills all together and travels primarily through the Forest Management trail and some of the horse paths.

Summer 2014: Week 4 Maps

Had some more problems with rainstorms and no volunteers this week.  Thankfully, however, we were able to conduct three successful surveys despite the difficulties!

Summer 2014: Week 2 Maps

Despite a few close calls with rainstorms, we otherwise had fairly pleasant weather for monitoring this week.  In any case, here are the maps from our nights of monitoring at Heckrodt, 1000 Islands, Bubolz, and the WILD Center.

The DNR maps, in contrast, are much more in-depth, representing the bat calls we collected by species.  A more detailed comparison between these two types of maps can be read here.  An explanation of the WDNR map legends can be found here.

Summer 2014: Week 1 Maps

Our third summer of bat monitoring is already underway and its about time that I post the maps showing the data we collected!  Check back every Friday throughout the summer for the maps of that week.  Also make sure to look back at previous posts later in the summer where I will add the maps I receive maps back from the Wisconsin DNR identifying the bat calls we recorded by species.
