posted 15 Feb 2016, 02:12 by Fowey RiverCC

It has been another successful weekend for Fowey River Canoe Club at the second race of the Waterside series; 17.5 miles long with 19 portages on the Kennet and Avon Canal. Eleven of our paddlers took part in the Waterside B race with many of our club members getting involved to help support the paddlers throughout.

Fowey River Canoe Club entered three junior K2’s into the race. The first of which being Dan Palmer and Bronte Holden who entered the Junior boys k2 category (despite being a mixed crew) and had a great result of coming 3rd, with a time of  2 hours 27 minutes, beating the junior mixed record by 10 minutes. Caity Irwin and Chloe Dobbs completed the race for the first time in 3 hours 24 minutes, coming 2nd in the junior ladies K2 class. The final junior K2 from the club is Alice Bray and Thomas Steer who entered the race for the first time in the mixed K2 class, completing it in a time of 2 hours 52 minutes, coming in 10th. Well done to all our juniors for their tremendous results in this challenging race.

We also entered four senior K1 boats into the race. Michael Southey had an amazing result achieving another PB, with a time of 2 hours 32 minutes coming 6th in the senior men K1 class. Steve Riley also entered the senior men K1 class came in 12th with a time of 2 hours 52 minutes. Harry Gilbert who completed the race in 3 hours 7 minutes, running not paddling across the finish line after a broken paddle incident, finished 19th in the male K1 class. Due to unforeseen circumstances and the difficulty of the race Ryan Pearce and Richmond paddler Poppy Taylor had to withdraw from the race due to boat issues. Our final entrant was James Asser who came 10th in the K1 veteran class with a time of 2 hours 58 minutes.

Well done to all our club members for their fantastic results and efforts in both paddling and supporting and a big thank you to Brian Greenaway for being a fantastic coach and getting us all ready for the series. Good luck to everyone for the next race in the series, Waterside C, in two weeks time.
