Preserving the Past and Present for Our Future...
Fork Shoals, South Carolina
(photo: Fork Shoals Private High School 1908-1917)
Tucked away in southern Greenville County and surrounding the Reedy River, Fork Shoals, one of the country's first settlements, is a region that has been witness to an almost forgotten, but proud history. Ancient artifacts have been unearthed from these Cherokee hunting grounds, and the only local Revolutionary War battle was fought nearby. In the 1700's, a wave of settlers moved to the vicinity establishing farms, plantations, mills, shops, schools and churches. Fork Shoals School was one of the first accredited rural high schools in the state and several of the area churches are the oldest of their denomination in the country.
Over time, this southern part of Greenville County became unique for farming and textiles with many individuals working at both.
In this site, you will find photographs, videos and anecdotes that help to tell the story of this area which is still special and unique to residents and newcomers alike.
We are organizing our current collection at the present time and plan to add much more to this site as time moves forward.
Fork Shoals Historical Society is a recognized 501c3 charitable organization originally organized by members of the local community dedicated to the preservation of history relevant to this unique area of Greenville County in South Carolina.

Update! June 2024
Look carefully at the back of the McCullough House (also called Cedarhurst). Notice the difference between the newly restored areas and the original brick areas. And the two windows to the left were, until very recently, door openings. Now they are once again windows!
Keep donating to replace the porch! Thanks for all your support!
