LE CERCLE DES VOYAGEURS

Travel Arts Café. Rue des Grands Carmes 18. 1000 Brussels. (manneken pis). Tel.:02/512 39 49. Open 6/7 from 11am-...    Closed on Tuesdays.

Evasion. Travel. Discovery. Encounter. Sharing.

A spot where globetrotters, adventure seekers and epicureans meet to talk about travelled roads, to prepare the unprecedented ones, to broaden their horizons.

A classy hang out with a bright and somewhat colonial interior (a beautiful ceiling globe) where, besides the usual conferences/ slideshows on all the countries of the world, interesting round tables are given such as “Women in Afghanistan”, “Through Canada by sled”, “On foot from Ghent to Jerusalem”,…

Le Cercle also organises Brazilian table d’hôtes, photographic expositions, literary salons, jazz concerts,…

There is a documentation room with heaps of travel info giving you the opportunity to well prepare a voyage, there is an amazing display of travel guides and magazines and with autumn coming up this is a perfect spot to pose yourself in one of very comfortable leather club chairs and to indulge in a home made dessert a fine glass of wine and to stargaze.

concept, cosy, selection of wines, correct service, world music

correct service is not a constant factor

MARKTEN

Place du Vieux Marché aux Grains 5. 1000 Brussels.  Mon-Sat:11am-11pm.Sun: 11am-6pm.                        Kitchen: 12am-10.30pm.

The cafe here is part of the community centre and is responsible for most of the courses organised in Brussels throughout the year, from bio gardening on the roof to web designing and from sowing to Qi-Gong. In the heart of the popular Dansaert area in town, the customers are mostly quite arty, involved in literature or fashion or film. The interior offers a minimalist rather cold welcome… but once the sun appears, the atmosphere rises with the temperature. The place turns in to a central meeting point displaying more variety in the crowd which makes it more interesting. The kitchen offers us tasty lasagnes, salads and other snacks for very reasonable prices. They have some vegetarian options, which I consider thoughtful. The staff, although most of them very Flemish, kindly adapts to the language spoken by the customer. In short, a cool address to enjoy a refreshing drink in the shade under the trees or sun, a perfect place to have a light meal for a light price… in the centre of Brussels with a wonderful view on the Church of Saint-Catherine..

 atmosphere, food, service

crowd not always eclectic, highly flemish crowd

   TERRA INCOGNITA

Estaminet.56, Rue de Roumanie. Place Morichar.1060 Saint-Gilles. Mon-Sat 11am-...

If you ask yourself why Saint-Gilles is so popular, one of the answers definitely lies within Terra Incognita, one of the beating hearts of the 1060 community. A place that sometimes feels more at home than home, not only thanks to the warmth of Mousse's welcome, the homely selection of mediterranean tapas or the laid back atmosphere, but also thanks to the openminded and cosmopolitan 30+crowd hanging out there most of the time, genuinely interested in making new encounters over a local beer. Go there to write or read in the Moroccan-styled decorated reading corner, to share a bottle (or more) of Spanish red, catching up with friends or to sunbathe on the terrace. Mousse, one of the owners, has the following wish: "to make anyone who walks through the door, feel welcome and comfortable and free to be who they are..."

Nice selection of tapas, daily dish, local beers, monthly expositions of drawings/paintings/photographs, jazzy concerts, small terrace, high feelgood  factor... The pink panther likes!

Full house most of the time and quite smokey

THE VELVET CAFE

Chaussée de Charleroi 161. 1060 Bruxelles.

 Tel: 02 534 07 58.Mon-Sat 10-19.30

Do you like flowers? Orchids in particular? Would you like to escape the city, even for just a little while and experience Zen in the midst of Brussels?  What a wonderful idea to create a terrace (3 tables) in the garden @ the back of your flowershop and give us the opportunity to enjoy these magnificent creatures Mother Nature offers. Come here for a cup of tea or a piece of chocolate moëlleux and bring along that book that you haven't been able to finish on any other terrace because you keep bumping into friends and aquaintances.

The flowers, the garden, the peace & quiet

A limited selection of drinks, but let's not forget that this is an orchidshop with a small terrace, not a bar selling flowers!
