From Ixtapa / Zihuatanejo fly fish for roosterfish and jack crevalle on the back side of the waves, with dorado, black skipjack tuna, sierras, and green jacks cruising the inshore waters only about a half mile off the beach. Or fly fish, with a short boat ride of only about 10 to 12 miles (average), for the blue water species of sailfish, dorado, blue marlin, striped marlin, and yellowfin tuna.
Another option is we depart Ixtapa / Zihuatanejo in my Suburban and make an hour and a half ride down to Puerto Vicente Guerrero to fish all the same species in the essentially virgin waters there. The village is like stepping back 50 years in time, and one of the few true fishing villages remaining in Mexico. http://ed-kunze.blogspot.mx/2012/03/puerto-vicente-guerrero.html
Several of our captains here in Ixtapa / Zihuatanejo are world class fisherman. To just spend a day on the boat with them is an experience in itself. And, they understand the fly fishing concept, because we have been fishing together for over 14 years now.
With me as the guide, we can fish on the class of boat of your choice. Pangas charter for $400 a day (depart about 6:30 in the morning and return about 1:30), and a small cruiser of 24 to 30 feet is $500. My guide fee, drinking water, a few sodas, lunch, and license is included. Also included is all fly fishing gear, teaser gear, leaders, flies, fishing license, etc.
If you are fairly experienced and have all your own gear, a panga charters for $250 a day. The panga will have 1st class conventional teasing gear, but no fly gear.
