Can do statements in language education in Japan and beyond

The Framework & Language Portfolio Special Interest Group (FLP SIG), was established to
bring forward issues and practices regarding use of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), and the European Language Portfolio (ELP) in Japan. A recurring theme at SIG discussions was that many people are not aware of how to use these resources, particularly can do statements, effectively. In general can do statements can facilitate language education in a positive and transparent way. One aim of this publication is to
give specific ideas and resources for educators to bring into classrooms. As a result many of the papers in this volume take on an action research focus. Several other papers seek to explain the development and issues regarding use of the CEFR, the ELP and can do statements.
