Teaching the Civil War as a Focal Point in American History
This monthly series combines young adult historical fiction, memoirs, a stunning book of Civil War photographs, contextual articles, and a graphic novel to bring forth issues central to our nation’s history, beginning with the American Revolution and continuing through to the end of the Civil War. The program features book discussions and primary source inquiry sessions. Field Studies in Boston and Hartford and a place-based Summer Institute will deepen our immersion into the topic.
Reading strategy tools and primary source inquiry will be modeled throughout the year’s activities and the school year will culminate with a Student Work Session when all teachers will share a primary source activity and examples of student work and assessment from their classroom.
