👋

hoi. I am florian schaffner.

I currently work as the chief financial officer and head of data at algrano, a swiss-based online marketplace for coffee trading between farmers and roasters. Before algrano, I was at credit suisse's crco analytics and data science team for 3.5 years in zurich (switzerland), working as product manager in the commodity trade finance space as well as assessing and testing new machine learning and analytics use cases. I joined credit suisse after obtaining my PhD at the university of zurich's department of economics, where my research focussed on applied econometrics, my job market paper on search and matching in online dating. I also taught statistics, econometrics (regression, classification) and causal analysis (e.g. IV, Diff-in-Diff, RDD).

Before all this, I graduated from swiss media group ringier's journalism school and worked there as an editor. An increasingly long time ago, I also worked as an investment analyst at zurich insurance. Even longer ago, I studied international relations at the university of geneva.

I've lived in zurich, geneva and beijing. I'm born in the year of the 🐯.

I'm very much into economics (mostly micro) and human decision making, econometrics, and machine learning as well as some random stuff. I'm still trying to improve my writing skills. I also follow book recommendations from all kinds of people on whatever piques their interest. I've cofounded and played around with a bunch of things, including print matters!, wyatt, up&coming and writing a local newsletter with about 1.5k subscribers and a surprisingly decent open rate. In some of these I'm still involved in. I also have some new ideas.
