News This Week:
Civics in Action:
Last year, you might recall seeing Flora Vista 5th& 6th graders out on our grassy slope recording crossing data and driver/pedestrian incidents. These students had decided to pick back up what had been a longtime safety concern in our community - the need for a crosswalk at Wandering Rd. The students then requested and were provided the opportunity to speak to the Encinitas City Council’s School District Liaison Committee. Councilmembers, School Superintendents, and City Staff listened and asked questions as our students spoke passionately and articulately about our pressing safety need. Like a lot of good ideas, the crosswalk was not immediately approved or funded. However, we just received word from the city that the project has been approved and submitted for completion this summer! We are so proud of our young civic activists, and grateful to our teachers, parents, and EUSD leadership for supporting our students’ passion for improving their communities! Lastly, a huge “Thank you!” to the City of Encinitas, for recognizing the need and putting multiple teams on this project to get it accomplished this summer!
Check Out Our New Native Plants Garden!
Next time you're standing near the gate outside the Kindergarten playground, check out the new native plants garden against the front wall. This beautiful new garden is the result of hard work from Ms. Goyette's fourth grade class. The students researched, designed, and planted a native plant garden as part of their California studies. It looks great now and will be even more amazing once the plants are established.

This is just a little insight into what's to come with the larger community garden project, so be sure to stay tuned to see what else is coming!
Calling all Artists! The 2019-20 Reflections Theme is Revealed!
The arts - and the National PTA® Reflections program - support student success and serve as a valuable tool for engaging families and building strong partnerships in the school community. Founded in 1969, Reflections engages over 300,000 students and their families in arts education activities each year by encouraging students to explore the arts for fun and recognition.

We challenge students to begin thinking about the 2019-2020 theme "Look Within." Entries aren't due until the fall, but students can begin their work in literature, dance, music, photography, or art over the summer.

The Reflections General Flyer can be downloaded for more information, or click to watch the video Call for Entries. Further question? Contact Kristen Beyer or visit the PTA's Reflections Website.
Flora Vista Receives Top Honors in Civics!
Flora Vista is the ONLY elementary school in California to receive the top honor for Civics Education, the Award of Excellence!Congratulations to the FV students and staff for, in the words of CA Chief Justice Cantil-Sakauye, "creativity and commitment to civic students the skills they will need as active participants and leaders in our democracy." At Flora Vista, Civic Learning is a focus - and also a vehicle for students, as they develop solutions to real-world issues that matter to them, on topics ranging from local to global issues!

We would also like to thank our FV families for supporting your students’ passions and efforts to make our school, community, and world a kinder, more equitable, and more sustainable place for all!

Learning to Fly!
Our school is one of a kind. To provide our school with the best possible environment for learning and enrichment, Flora Vista draws upon excellent teachers, staff, and parents to be the best we can be.

This level of commitment to excellence requires time, thought, and of course, money to reach our highest potential.

Flora Vista is asking all 2018-2019 families to donate $300 per student to support the enrichment programs funded through our PTA and EFF. Parent donations fund programs that help our students spread their wings and learn to fly!

These programs include:
  • Music
  • Lab Science
  • Drama
  • ArtRageous Curriculum
  • Fall Social
  • Extra Library with Mrs. Paulson
  • Reading Specialists
  • And much more...

Please take a moment to donate any amount to support your child and your school at the start of the 2018-2019 year!
