Dowel Rods Dripping
Dowel Rods Dripping
Is this gross? YES!

Staining dowel rods turns out to be a lot more difficult than I thought. First I stained them while they laid across some old crappy wooden thingies (I have no idea what they are, but they were in the basement.) Well the stain pools up on the bottom if they're laying horizontal! UGH!

Not to mention our previous stain was too light.

So today we bought sedona red, minwax brand. It's lovely. It matches our wood floors very very close. I think the layers tomorrow will bring it up to matching the wooden trim around the windows pretty closely.

Then my husband hammered u-nails (is that what they are called?) into one end and I tied them up with crochet cotton yarn. Perfect! The stain effect is really nice, kind of streaky like our wood trim.

The only problem is a gigantic swarm of gnats flew into my sticks. That's so gross. I gotta sand them crappers off the sticks tomorrow!

These will be used for the tab top curtains (there's another photo from today, showing the gingham curtain edges). We're debating how to hang them. I think brass cup hooks, that are 1 1/4" will work great. Silver or Gold ones will be too obvious but I saw soem real great brass ones at Walmart, they'll fade nicely and not be too obvious against the wood color.

There's four sticks total, in various lengths to fit the various four windows in the kitchen. One door window, one tall window, and two windows that are actually side by side but Walmart doesn't sell super long dowel rods so we'll stick two up there next to each other.

I wiped the gloopy drips off, but not till after I got a photo obviously :)

Store bought curtain rods won't fit over the double window, there is a cabinet in the way. We also couldn't open the kitchen door with a store bought kind. So this is why we're making our own. (Plus, these match better than any ol' crappy store kind!)

This was a picture shot during my aborted Sanyo HD2 phase. That camera promised much and delivered little. This photo turned out ok, but don’t buy the hype. Sure you can shoot in “HD” and take decent photos. But the main selling point, that you can take sills while shooting video, is a lot of bunk. The video on the LCD freezes for 6 seconds after you take a shot (meanwhile you have to keep shooting the video without the LCD). Plus the flash doesn’t work in video mode, so unless you happen to be shooting on the surface of the sun, you can pretty much kiss shots that are in focus good bye. On the bright side, Circuit City didn’t charge me a restocking fee to return that gem. Score 1 for Circuit City, negative 10 for the HD2. One day that will be a killer product, but that day is not yet upon us.
