Flash Bird Walks - Baird Ornithological Club, Reading, PA

When we plan our club's field trip schedule each summer, we schedule field trips for when and where we expect (and hope!) it will make for a good birding experience. However, it is impossible to perfectly anticipate all the good birding opportunities which might arise after our schedule is published, so this web site has been set up as a place to publicize club field trips on short notice (often VERY SHORT!) and we hope this will enable more members, friends and guests to see good birds.

Short cut link to this site is http://bit.ly/bocbirding

Suggestions for (and offers to lead!) flash Bird Walks are welcome from all BOC members and friends.

Untitled Location

If you aren't a participant in the Bernville Christmas Bird Count and still want to get out birding on New Year's Day, Ken Lebo will once again be leading a Flash Bird Walk. Meet at  8:00a m  at Brenneman’s Quarry. (You can start your year's list at your own bird feeder, sunrise is at 7:26 am!)

We park down in the parking lot at Cacoosing Meadows Park' parking lot walk up Reedy Road to get a good view of the waterfowl in the water in quarry. The we will drive on to blue Marsh and other areas in Central Berks County (Roughly the same route we followed on the PSO field trip last March 1st.)

We can end at the quarry. Ken will have his van and can take 6 others. If there are more or people want to be able to break off early they can follow in their own car. The plan is to finish up about noon back at Cacoosing Meadows and the Quarry.

IN CASE OF BAD WEATHER: the walk will be held on January 2nd. If in doubt chek with Ken at  klebo@dejazzd.com

4th Tuesday Bird Walk at Breneman's Quarry and more

posted Nov 21, 2016, 6:31 AM by Mike Slater

Hi BOC Members and Friends,

We will meet at 8 am at the parking lot at the west end of Cacoosing Meadows Park along Reedy Rd. at 8 am. and walk up to the Quarry overlook spot. Waterfowl have returned so we will probably move on to one or two other spots like State Hill Boat launch and/or Lake Ontelaunee also.

Who knows what the winds may have brought down. Maybe a Ross' Goose like this one I digiscoped at the quarry back in 2013 on November 23!

I hope to see a few of you there,
Mike Slater

For this Tuesday's birdwalk we will visit the relatively new Buxton Conservancy Park in Brecknock Township. The trail is a loop of a little over a mile down the small valley through the woods and back up again. Woodpeckers and other woodland birds are especially prominent here on the well prepared and pleasant trail through tis recently established public park. The Reading Eagle has had several nice articles about the Buxton Conservancy Preserve.

Leader: Mike Slater
Location: Buxton Conservancy.
        81 Fitterling Road, Brecknock Township
-From the intersection of Routes 625 and 724 in Shillington/Kenhorst
-Take PA 625 south for about 4.5 miles to Fitterling Rd..
-Turn Left on Fitterling Rd. and go about 0.4 mile to the entrance which is a gravel lane on the right. There is a short driveway down to the parking lot.

Notes: If you get to Sweitzer Road you have gone to far.
Also there is No Parking allowed along Fitterling road.
