The Fisher 32 is a versatile motor sailer, suited to a wide range of cruising activities. The design is based on the Fisher 30, one of a series of Fishers from the shipyard of British naval architects Wyatt and Freeman who are well experienced in creating vessels for the wild North Sea. Built by Sydney based Freeward Fisher Marine to Lloyds 100 A1 standards, the Fisher 32 is as equally capable of cruising the oceans of the world as she is taking the family for a picnic in the next bay.

This vessel has been with the present owner for 11 years. She has been maintained with TLC and has been fitted with facilities making cruising safer and more convenient. With a high efficiency Waeco electric refrigerator, a 160Ah Sonnenschein maintenance-free house battery system and a solar panel, perishables can be kept cold for many days without the need to run the engine. She is also fitted with a sewage holding tank enabling her to visit environmentally sensitive areas. She is fitted with safety gear required for coastal cruising and has successfully completed a number of cruises, her more recent voyages being from her mooring in Port Hacking to Port Stephens and Jervis Bay. She is a dry boat taking very little water even in a heavy seaway. The Raytheon autopilot makes passage making a pleasure.

The wheelhouse provides a retreat from wild weather while enabling the vessel to be sailed with good visibility. The 4-piece wheelhouse rear doors can be fully opened or even removed to provide a large living area in good weather, while a canopy provides shelter from the sun.

The BMW/Hatz engine with 1500 hours has never missed a beat and has been fitted with an external oil cooler/filter combination. A triple section fuel filter has also been fitted.

The aft cabin together with the forward cabin and saloon provides comfortable sleeping accommodation for 6 people.

The heavy duty GRP hull and superstructure mouldings are bonded together beneath bulwark capping. Deck areas are balsa core sandwich moulded. Construction is in accordance with +100 A1 Lloyds requirements for certification.


Approximately 4 tons of cast iron ballast is encapsulated within the GRP keel to form an integral part of the hull structure.


Four major transverse bulkheads of timber veneer faced marine grade plywood are bonded to hull and superstructure.


Heavy duty double skin GRP construction moulded as an integral part of the deck and hull with solid timber capping. A substantial rubbing strake is fitted.


A BMW/Hatz D50, 3 cylinder, 33kW, fresh water cooled engine is fitted.  An external oil cooler has replaced the original engine mounted unit, thus eliminating the oil cooler corrosion problems commonly attributed to these engines. An external oil filter has also been fitted to eliminate the former problem of spilling considerable oil into the bilge when the engine mounted unit was changed. The cooling water heat exchanger has been cleaned and inspected and found to be in excellent condition. Fuel consumption has not been accurately checked but is thought to be in the vicinity of 3 lit/hour at comfortable cruising speeds. Transmission is via a Hurth reversing gearbox. Stern Gear

The bronze stern tube with water lubricated long life bearings carries the 30mm diameter stainless steel shaft driving a 3-bladed 440mm diameter x 400mm pitch bronze propeller.

Steering Gear

A heavy duty cable steering system drives the stainless steel rudder stock from a steering wheel in the wheelhouse. The cockpit steering is by a teak tiller fitted to the top of the rudder stock. The rudder is a GRP moulding fitted to a stainless steel subframe with stainless steel stock and fittings. It can be removed via stainless steel disconnect plates. Steering can be accomplished equally well using the wheelhouse wheel or the cockpit tiller.


A Raytheon ST5000 Sailpilot autopilot is fitted. The linear drive and rudder reference units are mounted under cover beneath the cockpit. Ready access is available for inspection and maintenance. The linear drive is coupled directly to the rudder stock cross arm thus minimising the number of moving parts in the system.


Stainless steel tanks on the sides of the engine bay; diesel on port side and fresh house water on starboard side each have a capacity of 430 litres. The diesel filler pipe is located outside the rear of the wheelhouse facilitating filling either from wharf mounted pump or from 10 or 20 lit. containers. The water tank filler is located just inside the wheelhouse under the starboard side seat. This location makes it virtually impossible to fill the tank with diesel rather than water by mistake. Filling from a garden type hose with a hand controlled shutoff valve is the usual method.

Bilge pumps

An electric bilge pump operated by a switch on the wheelhouse switch panel is fitted to the main sump aft of the ballast keel. The sump tank is fitted with perspex clean-out plates and can be used to collect waste water from galley and closet wash basin/shower if desired. Water is discharged overboard by an electric pump via a through hull fitting. An additional high capacity manual diaphragm pump is operated from the cockpit.

Deck Pump

A salt water pump mounted in the engine bay provides pressurised salt water to a deck fitting. A standard garden type hose fitting enables the use of a hose for cleaning anchor, chain, decks, etc.


Four Sonnenschein maintenance free 12V 80Ah batteries are fitted to operate in three different circuits.

One battery is dedicated to engine starting ensuring that it will not be unexpectedly discharged.

The house battery system comprises two batteries in parallel to provide 160Ah for supplying radios, instruments, lights, etc.

The fourth battery is provided for winches (anchor and mainsail furler). This ensures that such high demand loads are not imposed on the house battery supplying delicate instruments.

Normally, no manual switching of battery circuits takes place. However, in an emergency, switches are provided to connect battery circuits in parallel.

All batteries are charged from the engine alternator via a battery management system that provides the highest charge to the most discharged battery first. A 12W solar panel is sufficient to replenish the charge taken by normal light duty house operations (radio, lights, vacuum cleaner, electric refrigerator for a few days, etc.) and maintains all batteries at full charge


A Waeco CU-84 refrigeration system was installed in 2005. The VD-05 evaporator is fitted to the original refrigerator storage compartment in the forward end of the galley next to the sink. The refrigerator is powered from the 12V house battery which will run the refrigerator for several days without the need to start the engine for battery charging.

Spars and rigging

The mast head, single spreader sloop rig comprises a 12m deck stepped mast with 4.4m boom. All 1 x 19 SS standing rigging was renewed in 2003. At the same time the mast and boom were repainted, mast steps fitted, internal mast wiring replaced and new lights fitted. Additional halyards have been fitted for spinnaker and spare headsail. A halyard block and mast attachment have been provided for a future staysail.


An unbattoned 24 sq.m mainsail is attached to its Furlaway in-mast furler, operated from the cockpit via a hydraulic drive. Preventers attached to the boom and led back to the cockpit secure the boom against unwanted gybes.

A 30 sq.m headsail is fitted to a forestay furler, operated from the cockpit. Adjustable blocks attached to the toerails enable sheeting angle to be optimised.

heavy weather part furling is an easy and practical means of reducing sail while retaining a reasonable sail shape.

Under normal conditions all sailing activities involving tacking, gybing, sail trimming and furling/unfurling can be performed from the cockpit.

Deck fittings

Pulpit, pushpit and stauchions and double lifelines are of stainless steel. A pelican hook is provided at the aft end of the upper portside lifeline to facilitate access when needed.

Two large mooring cleats are provided on the foredeck with two large fairleads for secure mooring line attachment. Two large cleats are fitted to the stern.

All working surfaces including those on the wheelhouse roof are covered with Treadmaster non-slip surface. Teak fore and aft handrails are fitted to wheelhouse roof. The wheelhouse is fitted with a perspex roof panel for observation of sails from within the wheelhouse.

Anchors and associated gear

A 35lb CQR anchor with 50m of 5/16" galvanised iron chain is located in the forepeak anchor locker. A Lofrans Airon windlass with clutch is fitted for raising the anchor chain. A 20lb Danforth anchor with ground chain and line is fitted in the cockpit portside locker. A spare 35lb CQR anchor is available.

Radio equipment

A Uniden MC-480 VHF transceiver is fitted. It provides 55 transmit and receive channels, selectable 1 or 25W power output. A masthead antenna is fitted to provide wide range coverage.

Provision is available for an HF transceiver with 12V power available to the mounting plate. The backstay is fitted with insulators top and bottom to provide a 10m antenna. A backup HF antenna is fitted to the stern.  The original Wagner HF transceiver 829MR is available if required.

A GME GR926 marine stereo is fitted for reception of AM/FM broadcast stations


Three sleeping areas are available. The forecabin and aft cabin are normally left set up for sleeping (or storage) while the saloon is convertible between sleeping and living. Each area can be closed off from the others.


Roughly triangular shaped, two 2m berths are provided with 100mm foam cushions. A large locker beneath the berths provides substantial storage. A removable section at the entry provides standing room. Lights are provided for each berth. Two fixed windows in the hull provide light while a translucent hatch provides more light and access to the foredeck


A large dinette area with raised carpeted console is arranged on the port side with a settee surrounding three sides of the timber table. This table can be lowered to convert the area into a double berth 1800 x 1100mm. The seat cushions are 100mm thick. Headroom is 1880mm. Four opening windows are provided. Three spacious lockers are provided under the seats with another locker behind the side seat back. A bookshelf is fitted.

    Aft cabin

The aft cabin houses a double berth 2050 x 1100mm on a 100mm foam base. Daytime lighting is provided by a prism in the deck above. A roof mounted light is provided together with reading lights on each side of the berth. A large locker is provided under the berth. An opening window is provided for light and ventilation. A dressing table with lockers above and below provide space for clothes and personal gear.


The galley is located along the starboard side of the saloon with the Maxie metho stove on the right hand side, the sink in the centre and refrigerator cabinet at the left hand side. Hot and cold pressurised water is available together with a cold water hand pump. Two opening windows are fitted in the hull and an overhead light is fitted in the roof. Generous storage is provided for cutlery, plates and cups etc. Two lockers below the sink provide storage for saucepans, and other gear


The closet houses a hand pumped toilet with saltwater inlet and outlet fittings within nearby reach in an adjacent locker. A basin with a hand house water pump is provided. A hand held shower is supplied by hot and cold pressurised water. An opening window and air vent are fitted for light and ventilation. An overhead light is fitted. Lockers are fitted above and below the basin.

To satisfy environmental requirements for waste retention, a 100 lit sewage holding tank has been fitted under the cockpit in the aft region of the engine bay. The tank is piped to the plumbing locker in the closet where Y-valves and a high capacity hand pump are fitted to direct waste. Three options are provided (1) feed toilet waste directly to the hull outlet, (2) feed toilet waste to the holding tank, (3) pump out holding tank through hull fitting (for emptying at sea). The Y-valves can be locked in position if required by the environmental authority. A deck outlet could be fitted to deliver waste to an on-shore pumpout station.

The door fitted to the locker containing plumbing was removed to allow operation of the pump for emptying the holding tank. This door will be provided and could be refitted with a slot cut to provide access for the waste holding tank pump handle.


A raised wheelhouse is the feature of the Fisher series of yachts. Designed in accordance with good maritime practice, it provides all-round visibility with the front windows sloping forward at the top to eliminate any reflections from internal lights at night.

Wheel steering is fitted together with an engine control console. Electrical switch panels and various displays are within easy reach on an overhead panel.

The 4-piece rear doors can be fully opened or even removed to provide a large living area in good weather, while a canopy provides shelter from the sun.


The cockpit is fitted with seats with removable cushions on both sides and the rear. Lockers under each seat provide ample storage for sheets, fenders and other wet gear. A tiller in the cockpit is attached to the top of the rudder stock.

A removable awning provides shade and shelter from inclement weather.


Navman Wind 3100 indicator with masthead mounted transducer. Normal display shows wind speed and apparent wind direction. Other displays can be selected for special needs. NMEA 0183 input/output is provided for interface with other equipment.

Fuso 30A Depth sounder with alarm for depth below 2m (1.3m clearance below keel)

*  Battery monitor displays voltage of engine, winch and house battery systems to 2 decimal places for accurate monitoring of battery state of charge.

Safety gear

Safety equipment is fitted to meet the requirements of NSW Maritime offshore. In addition are several items including a comprehensive first aid kit specified for Yachting Australia's extended cruising requirements.


The vessel was the tenth of 18 built by Freeward Fisher Marine, launched on 22/12/1986 and commissioned in 1987. Named Riptide by her first owner, she was sold to her second owner on 7/2/1990. It is believed that Riptide's first and second owners remained generally within Sydney Harbour using the vessel for social activities.

In May 1999, Riptide was transferred to her third owner who used her for day sailing in and around Port Hacking. On 31/5/2000 Riptide was purchased by her present owners. Under her present ownership she has been fitted with facilities for extended cruising including standing rigging renewal, mast steps, additional halyards, a battery powered refrigerator and sewage holding tank together with safety equipment to meet the offshore requirements of NSW Maritime. In 2003 her name was changed from Riptide to Freewinds.
