My name is Melissa McGarvey. As you can see, I have been on my own fitness journey the past several years. I started a dysfunctional relationship with food at a very young age, grew up on yo-yo diets, and then entered into adulthood on a roller coaster of weight fluctuations. My before picture in the blue here was the picture that started my lifestyle change, my REAL transformation. I saw this picture after a vacation I took and I thought "Hey! I have the same shorts as that girl. And the same phone..." and was MORTIFIED that the picture was of me. Because, I didn't SEE myself that way. In fact, in my mind, I looked closer to my after picture. I thought I was fit. That very day, out of pain and frustration, I set out to run a mile. I couldn't do it. I was wheezing and bent over after only a handful of steps. I made myself complete the mile and immediately went to an exercise class. It was my line in the sand that I was ready to change. RIGHT NOW. I began to beast it in the gym and because of the mile run incident, decided to make a goal of running a half marathon. In eight months time, I completed my first half marathon and went on to run 4 more. I got accustomed to eating like a distance runner and considered training for a full marathon. I was weight training on top of the running. And though I had lost about 40 pounds over that process and was getting decently fit, I realized I was getting tired working that pace and had troubled thoughts like "what am I going to do when I don't exercise 2-3 hours a day" or "why can't I lose this last little bit of weight" or "why, if I exercise all the time and eat right, does my body not look like what I am aiming for?".
I started to slip. The momentum once again in my life started to go the other way and a year later my weight was back up. I had regained almost all that I had lost. I was so DONE. Done with diets. Done with exercise. I wasn't happy. I felt lost. But I had given up. The struggle had exhausted me. In April of 2011, I stumbled into a 90 Day Challenge party, that featured ViSalus* products. I went to simply get off the invitation list. After all, I had "divorced" diets. But what I saw was a simple segue into a possible change. I started the program and did not change any of my habits at first. Still living on fast food and sedentary ways. In three weeks I had lost 16 pounds and I felt so much better I decided to venture back into the gym. I was surprised to find I ENJOY working out...when I stopped using it as a punishment for eating! In fact, I really loved working out and decided to finally pursue the physique I always wanted and to start releasing fat...for GOOD. I lost a total of 45 lbs during my 90 Day Challenge, I kept it off for a year, and then embarked on another 90 Day Challenge to get to my goal weight and accomplish a goal that had come to the surface during this journey: to compete in a Figure fitness competition. So my lifestyle modified again toward focused workouts of an athlete (!) and clean eating on top of the program. I am happy to report I accomplished that goal on May 18 of this year and had the time of my life realizing my dream. The show wasn't the best part though. The journey was. I realized I am so much stronger than I ever knew. And when I dedicate myself to something, I can do amazing things. And my body is amazing and wants to be healthy. When my mind, body and soul are on the same track, it's truly inspiring what happens. And the show just really was a statement to myself that all of the emotional baggage that led to my troubles with weight (because weight issues are so rarely about food itself), I was ready to let go of that baggage and set myself free. It's the most liberating decision I've ever made.
