In 1869 Dmitri Mendeleev tried to find some pettern in the properties of the known elements. He found that if he arranged the elements in order of increasing atomic mass, some of their properties repested in a Periodic pattern. He used this information to device what he called the Periodic Table.  The horizontal rows of the table are called PERIODS and the vertical columns are called GROUPS. Most of the elements are metals and appear on the left hand side of the table.
