The important work of "spreading the word" happens only because of the generosity of volunteers. Be part of the crew that actively works to SERVE LITERACY.

Some ways you can help:
  • Stock book shelves at the food shelf.
This is an ongoing job and needs volunteers every week to make it happen.  We ask volunteers to commit to helping one day each month.
  • Pick up books during and following book drives.
More volunteers are needed during drives, but when they're done they are done.  This is a great way to volunteer just occasionally.
  • Organize book storage spaces.
This is another opportunity for the occasional volunteer. We separate books by levels and quality.
  •  Mailings
Sister chapters of Read to Feed the Mind need supplies and support.  We have resources that need to be mailed out to help them run their chapters.
  • Spread the Word
Talk with food shelf directors in your community.  Visit them to see what their space needs/issues are.  Help us help them so that they, too, can serve up literacy. It is our hope to see sister chapters of Read to Feed the Mind in food shelves all across the country.

  • Advocate for Read to Feed the Mind
Whether looking for new spaces to store books, find grants that fit our mission, survey our volunteers for service satisfaction or call to recruit benefactors and supporters, advocates are always needed.  This can be a one time volunteer opportunity or an ongoing responsibility, tailored to suit your strengths and needs.

  • Donate to Read to Feed the Mind
Some of our expenses include rent for our storage space, purchases of used books through second-hand sales, print materials, signage, and the labels that we place in the front of every book.  It is our hope to one day provide labels and signs without cost or at a very minimal cost to our sister chapters.

  • Participate in our fundraiser auction
We are holding a Trade Up auction to raise revenue at TradeUpForCharity.com.  Check it out.  Purchases are made by trading for something more valuable than the item offered on auction.  Trades are made directly through us, so contact us at info @ Read to Feed the Mind . org if you'd like to trade.  The mission is literacy.

Email us if you would like to volunteer.  If you have an idea for helping that is not listed, PLEASE do share it!

Sister Chapters: Add your local book drives to this calender:

Fill out the contacts form to add to the calendar below.  Please be specific about your addition by including the book drive address on the "where" line when editing your event.  This will help visitors find out where to drop off their books, helping your drive!

Volunteer Opportunities & Schedules

BUFFALO FOOD SHELF HOURS:  Tuesdays 5:30-8:00; Thursdays 6:30-8:30; Fridays 10:30-12:30
Show up half an hour before opening to restock books on the bookcase immediately to your right as you walk through the door.  If you are there while patrons are visiting, invite children to the shelf and help them find a book to love.  Also offer to help parents or simply invite them to take one book for every child in their family.
