I joined the faculty in January 2007 and started the local Information Retrieval Research group. I arrived in Lugano after several years spent in Scotland, where I was a Professor at the Department of Computer and Information Sciences of the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow.
My main areas of research are Information Retrieval, Text Mining, and Digital Libraries.
I hold a degree in Statistics and Economics from the
University of Padua (Italy) and a MSc and a PhD in Computing Science
from the University of Glasgow (UK). During 1992-97 I was Assistant Professor at the Department of Information Engineering of the University of Padova (Italy). In 1997-1999 I was a Research Fellow at the University of Glasgow (UK), at the International Computer Science Institute in Berkeley (USA), and at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (UK). Then, during 2000-06 I was a Professor at the University of Strathclyde (UK), spending some sabbatical time at IMAG (France), UC Berkeley (USA) and Xerox PARC (USA). Finally, in 2007 I came to Lugano, where I currently am.
