Full Professor

I joined the faculty in January 2007 and started the local Information Retrieval Research group. I arrived in Lugano after several years spent in Scotland, where I was a Professor at the Department of Computer and Information Sciences of the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow.

My main areas of research are Information Retrieval, Text Mining, and Digital Libraries.

Short Bio

I hold a degree in Statistics and Economics from the University of Padua (Italy) and a MSc and a PhD in Computing Science from the University of Glasgow (UK). During 1992-97 I was Assistant Professor at the Department of Information Engineering of the University of Padova (Italy). In 1997-1999 I was a Research Fellow at the University of Glasgow (UK), at the International Computer Science Institute in Berkeley (USA), and at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (UK). Then, during 2000-06 I was a Professor at the University of Strathclyde (UK), spending some sabbatical time at IMAG (France), UC Berkeley (USA) and Xerox PARC (USA). Finally, in 2007 I came to Lugano, where I currently am.
