Alcohol and Drug-Free Workplace Policy Statement 

Frederick County Public Schools is committed to the safety and well-being of its employees and students. The effect of alcohol and controlled substance abuse in the workplace presents a danger to all and is inconsistent with the standards and expectations for employment with the Frederick County Public Schools. 

In accord with its compliance obligations under the Drug-Free Workplace Act of 1988, Frederick County Public Schools will not tolerate the unlawful use, possession, sale or distribution of “illegal drugs,” nor will employees be permitted to work under the influence of “illegal drugs.”  

In addition, Frederick County Public Schools will not permit the use, consumption, possession, sale, or distribution of alcohol in the workplace, nor will employees be permitted to work under the influence of alcohol.  

For purposes of this policy, "illegal drugs" shall mean any controlled substance, imitation controlled substance, or marijuana as defined in Code of Virginia Section 18.2-247. 

For purposes of this policy, “workplace” shall mean the performance of duties during working hours or while on school board property, or when employees are performing assigned duties or assisting with student activities, whether or not the assignments take place on school board property or during usual working hours. 

Employment, or continued employment, with Frederick County Public Schools is contingent upon the employee’s adhering to the terms of this policy statement and implementing regulations. 

The Superintendent will promulgate regulations to ensure implementation and adherence to this policy.
