311R - Interscholastic Competition

Parental permission and physical examination by a medical professional are required for participation in athletics.  All students participating in athletics are required to have insurance which covers accidents and/or injuries which occur while participating in interscholastic athletics/activities.  In order to be eligible to compete, students participating in athletics at the high school level must pay a non-refundable “pay to participate” fee for each sport in which they are a confirmed team member prior to the first official contest date in order to remain on the team.  There is no relationship between the “pay to participate” fee and a guarantee of student playing time.  Playing time for athletes is at the sole discretion of the coaching staff.

High school students shall meet eligibility requirements for Virginia High School League Interscholastic competitions, as defined in the current school year Virginia High School League Handbook.

Middle school students shall pass five courses the previous semester and meet all other requirements as defined by the scholarship rule of the Virginia High School League.

Middle school interscholastic athletics shall be available only to seventh and eighth grade students.

Sixth grade students, who meet eligibility standards, will be eligible to practice in cross country, track, and wrestling, but not participate in interscholastic activities.  A sixth grade student may be a manager only if he/she meets eligibility requirements and no other seventh or eighth grade student who meets the requirements is available or has expressed an interest. A bona fide sixth grade student may be granted eligibility if he/she has reached age 13 before August first.

Eighth grade students with middle school eligibility may not compete in interscholastic competition, practices, off-season conditioning and/or workouts at the high school level.  Rising ninth grade students may only participate in interscholastic competition, practices, off-season conditioning and/or workouts at the high school level after the conclusion of their eighth grade school year.

Eighth grade students who are not age eligible for middle school athletics may compete in interscholastic competition at the sub-varsity high school level with the following conditions:

                ·         The parent/guardian must provide transportation for all activities related to the sport.

·         The student must meet all eligibility requirements of Frederick County Public Schools and the Virginia High School League.

·         Student athletes shall not be released prior to scheduled dismissal except for competitions.

·         Student-athletes must have the approval of both the sending middle school principal and the receiving high school principal to participate in high school interscholastic competition.

·         Student-athletes must pay a non-refundable “pay to participate” fee for each sport in which they are a confirmed team member prior to the first official contest date.

Intramural programs should be available for all middle school students.
