What is FastChargeLeaf (FCL) ?
The Nissan Leaf has a 120 volt EVSE adapter supplied with your purchase. It takes about 14 hours to charge your car. The FCL upgrade allows users to send in their original EVSE adapter/charging cable and have it converted to also operate at 240V, (Level 2). The FCL upgrade consists of new 240V UL approved connectors added to the existing factory charging system. You can still charge at 120V by utilizing the bypass connector and charge at the (slow) Level 1, just as when you used the original set up, in the case where a 240V outlet is not available. You will still be able to charge at 120V after the upgrade, so you will have the best of both worlds.
What's in it for me?
The upgrade will allow you to fully charge in 1/2 the time.
Will it hurt my car?
The FCL is simply a pass-through device, it doesn't alter the AC power being presented, it simply sends it through to the car as-is once the safety interlock requirements have been met. It's basically just a "bypass". All the power processing and the actual charger unit itself is on-board in the car already, so the FCL is just a work around to send 240V to the Leaf. We are 100% confident that there is no way the FCL can damage your car, and will be happy to contact Nissan if they claim it does. It has already been well tested on new Leafs and the users have experienced no problems.
The on-board charger timer will not function with the FCL adapter in Level 2 mode (240V). It will work in the Level 1 mode. (120V). If you wish to use a timer for night charging and use the Level 2 mode , 240V fast charge, (off-peak), then an inexpensive 120V outlet timer would be used. Full instructions on how to do this very easy step will be supplied with your FCL adapter.
So how do I use it and why?
What is the upgrade process?
3. We fully test on our own Leaf.
How does the upgrade process work?
There are 4 ways to obtain an upgraded unit:
How do I use the upgraded unit on a 240V outlet?
The upgraded unit is supplied equipped with a standard NEMA L6-30 240V plug that can be plugged directly into the same type of outlet. These outlets are commonly found in many industrial and commercial settings. Your upgraded FCL will work on almost any outlet and power system anywhere, with a simple plug adapter. We do have adapters and extensions that will work with our upgrade on the ordering page. If your 240V outlet is close by where you are going to charge your leaf, you will not need to purchase a 240V extension cord with Nema L6-30 connectors. If you have any question just email us and we'll let you know what you need to order.
Can I use the original charger at my friends house without 240V?
Yes you can. Just plug the L6-30 plug into the bypass plug and you're good to go. Nothing else is needed.
What's it going to cost me?
The upgrade to your unit costs $149 plus $20 shipping (for most locations in the continental US).
My outlet is a not too close to where my Leaf is parked...got an extension cord?
The upgraded FCL will reduce the length of the factory Nissan EVSE charger/adapter by approximately three feet. Most Leaf owners, will need both a 120V and 240V extension cord, just tell us your arrangement for charging, what outlets you want to use and how far they are from the parked LEAF, and we'll let you know what to order. In this way you will everything you need when you receive your upgrade. If you use the FCL with just a 120 volt outlet as when it was supplied by Nissan then the length is the same 15 feet.
I have a volt...can you help me?
Sorry....buy a Leaf.
Will having my cord upgraded void my warranty?
It will not void the warranty on your car. The only way they can deny a claim is to prove that the upgrade damaged your car.
I live in Santa Barbara County, can I come by?
Sure...we upgrade while you wait if you want.
