Course Description: This middle school course is composed of instructional modules designed to enhance basic Family and Consumer Sciences foundations and skill sets. The modules are as follows: interpersonal relationships, personal finance and resource management, nutrition and wellness, food service and hospitality, early care and education, apparel and interior design. Students are eligible to receive EverFi’s Vault™, the NC eFoodhandler™ and the American Red Cross® Babysitter certifications.

Interpersonal Relationships- This module is designed to teach basic relationship and communication skills. Emphasis is on self-awareness, families, decision-making, conflict resolution and interpersonal relationships.

Personal Finance and Resource Management (EverFi’s Vault™)- This module is designed to teach basic financial literacy and resource management skills. Emphasis is on financial responsibility and decision making, planning and money Management, credit and debt insurance, risk management, savings and investing. EverFi’s Vault ™ Financial Literacy certification is available.

Nutrition and Wellness- This module is designed to teach basic kitchen techniques, skills, and resources needed to design and make healthy food choices. Emphasis is on essential nutrients, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) dietary guidelines, basic kitchen tools, meal planning and preparation.

Food Service and Hospitality (NC eFoodhandler™)- This module is designed to teach basic food safety and sanitation, culinary techniques and skills needed in the food service and hospitality industry. Emphasis is on safety and sanitation, culinary techniques and hospitality. The NC eFoodhandler ™ certification is available.

Early Care and Education (American Red Cross® Babysitter’s Training)- This module is designed to teach basic skills for babysitting. Emphasis is on child care, child development and the business of babysitting. The American Red Cross® Babysitter’s certification is available.

Apparel Design- This module is designed to teach basic skills and techniques needed in Apparel. Emphasis is on clothing choice, the elements of design and basic construction techniques.

Interior Design- This module is designed to teach basic skills and techniques needed in Interior Design. Emphasis is on the principles of design, sustainable design and management of living space.
