Programs

With our mission statement being “Neighbors helping neighbors bridge the hunger gap in Koochiching County one step at a time in a positive and respectful environment”, Falls Hunger Coalition’s Food Shelf is here to serve individuals and families without food or resources to buy food. We offer a five to seven day supply of essential food items to each household member. Clients complete an application for service to assist in determining their eligibility and are required to show proof of residency upon their second visit. Our intake specialists update client files on each visit, which is once every 30 days as needed, or sooner by referral. Personal shoppers then assist clients as they choose their food based on household size. We offer a comfortable environment for clients to shop, as if they were in a grocery store.

In providing services to the hungry, our slogan from inception has always been and continues to be:
“We will always choose to err on the side of compassion.”

But that is not all that we do here at Falls Hunger Coalition. Here are a few additional services and networking we provide:

FHC Bonus Bucks
  • FHC Bonus Bucks allows families ages 0-59 to purchase fresh/frozen produce and milk at local grocery stores. Vouchers in increments of $5 are issued when families visit our food shelf.
  • FHC Bonus Bucks may be used at County Market, Super One, J&D Foods, Northwoods L.B. Foods, Northome Grocery and the Community Market during the summer months. Wednesday afternoons at Backus Community Center
Senior Select
  • Senior Select provides income eligible seniors with vouchers to purchase fresh produce and dairy products at local grocery stores on a quarterly basis; currently serving 160+ households in Koochiching County.
  • Senior Select may be used at the Community Market during the summer months. Wednesday afternoons at Backus Community Center
  • Senior Select application and guidelines are available for download at the bottom of the page.
NAPS
  • In late 2012, Falls Hunger Coalition became the distribution and organizational site for NAPS (Nutritional Assistance Program for Seniors), a Commodity Supplemental Food Program. Once a month food packages containing nutrient-dense commodity food products are distributed to income eligible seniors (60 years and older) in Koochiching County. We have clients who visit our location to pick up the boxes, and with the help of our many volunteers, we are able to deliver boxes to seniors in our community who are unable to leave their homes.

Summer Snack Packs & Summer Meals
  • Complimenting the Summer Food Service program housed at Backus Community Center, Falls Hunger Coalition provides Snack Packs for children on Fridays. These Snack Packs are intended to help feed children over the weekend. Contents may include: canned meals, juice boxes, cold and hot cereal, fruit, crackers, fruit snacks, milk etc. to name a few and are easy items for children to prepare and eat. Parents/guardians are encouraged to attend the lunch with their children for $4 a day. Those who are unable to pay are covered by Falls Hunger Coalition. When we are able to provide it, FHC will donate bread, milk and additional items to prepare the summer meals as well.
Turkey Vouchers
  • During the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holiday Season, Falls Hunger Coalition issues Turkey Vouchers to families; these vouchers are good for a small turkey from local grocery stores.
Ham Vouchers
  • During Easter, Falls Hunger Coalition issues ham vouchers to all families that can be used at the local grocery stores.
