With our mission statement being “Neighbors helping neighbors bridge the hunger gap in Koochiching County one step at a time in a positive and respectful environment”, Falls Hunger Coalition’s Food Shelf is here to serve individuals and families without food or resources to buy food. We offer a five to seven day supply of essential food items to each household member. Clients complete an application for service to assist in determining their eligibility and may be required to show proof of residency at any time. Our intake specialists update client files on each visit, which is once every 30 days as needed, or sooner by referral. Personal shoppers then assist clients as they choose their food based on household size. We offer a comfortable environment for clients to shop, as if they were in a grocery store.

In providing services to the hungry, our slogan from inception has always been and continues to be:
“We will always choose to err on the side of compassion.”

But that is not all that we do here at Falls Hunger Coalition. Here are a few additional services and networking we provide:

FHC Bonus Bucks
  • FHC Bonus Bucks allows families ages 0-59 to purchase fresh/frozen produce and milk at local grocery stores. Vouchers in increments of $5 are issued when families visit our food shelf.
  • FHC Bonus Bucks may be used at County Market, Super One, J&D Foods, Northwoods L.B. Foods, Northome Grocery and the Community Market during the summer months. Wednesday afternoons at Backus Community Center
Senior Select
  • Senior Select provides income eligible seniors with vouchers to purchase fresh produce and dairy products at local grocery stores on a quarterly basis; currently serving 160+ households in Koochiching County.
  • Senior Select may be used at the Community Market during the summer months. Wednesday afternoons at Backus Community Center
  • Senior Select application and guidelines are available for download at the bottom of the page.
  • In late 2012, Falls Hunger Coalition became the distribution and organizational site for NAPS (Nutritional Assistance Program for Seniors), a Commodity Supplemental Food Program. Once a month food packages containing nutrient-dense commodity food products are distributed to income eligible seniors (60 years and older) in Koochiching County. We have clients who visit our location to pick up the boxes, and with the help of our many volunteers, we are able to deliver boxes to seniors in our community who are unable to leave their homes.
