1858            Sampson Shoe Factory founded

1867            French-Canadian and Irish unions (Crispins) form

1870            Sampson Shoe Factory becomes a thriving business     

                     Crispins go on strike and Sampson fires strikers

                     Went to China to get seventy-five replacement workers

1871            Returned to China to get fifty more workers

1876            Both Political parties included Chinese exclusion in campaigns

1840           Small number of Chinese brought to New England to study

1880           Only about five Chinese men remaining in North Adams

1882           Chinese Exclusion Act passed
