Joshua 24:15

And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.

"Then I realized that it is good and proper for a man to eat and drink, and to find satisfaction in his toilsome labor under the sun during the few days of life God has given him--for this is his lot. Moreover, when God gives any man wealth and possessions, and enables him to enjoy them, to accept his lot and be happy in his work--this is a gift of God. -- Ecclesiastes 5:18-19

Faith was an essential part of our family growing up on a farm in central Missouri.  There is probably no other occupation where it is so necessary to believe that God will provide.  We had faith that He would send the rain and the sun to make the seeds grow and produce, and that He would provide good weather for us to harvest the crop.

It was my father's belief that he was called by God to be a farmer, and that performing the labor of tilling the land was his way of glorifying God.

Whatever we do in life, we are also called by God to do His work in that area.   We are not doing our job on our own, He is guiding us.

"The greatest gift is the passion for reading. It is cheap, it consoles, it distracts, it excites, it gives you knowledge of the world and experience of a wide kind. It is a moral illumination." --Elizabeth Hardwick
