Dr. Faisal Abbas

Faisal Abbas is a Visiting Research Fellow, at the centre for Poverty, Equity and Growth in the developing and transition countries, At Gottingen University, Germany. He was an Assistant Professor at the department of Management Sciences, COMSATS Institute of Information Technology (CIIT), Islamabad, Pakistan. In the year 2015, he was visiting Assistant Professor at Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management, Cornell University, USA. Abbas worked as a Senior Economist with USAID Pakistan Trade Project where he assisted National Tariff commission (NTC) to develop an independent research unit, and was responsible for capacity building of NTC staff at Ministry of commerce. Earlier, he held positions as Assistant Professor at the department of Development Economics, South Asian University (SAU) New Delhi, India. Moreover, he was Pakistan fellow (Post Doc) at the department of Political and Cultural Change, University of Bonn, Germany and worked in the flood affected districts of South Punjab, Pakistan. He has been a Researcher for a DFID-funded project on urban health issues in Faisalabad, Pakistan. Also, he served as a Researcher at the Environmental and Resource Economics Department at the University of Agriculture, Faisalabad.

He completed his German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) funded PhD from Centre for Development Research, University of Bonn. His PhD level research focused on issues of public health expenditures, and role of health status and nutrition on the development of Pakistan. A development economist by training, he has written on issues related to agriculture, nutrition and health; public policy; remittances and development; rural poverty; health economics; energy; and gender and education. He is also a reviewer of various national and international journals such as Global Health Action; Food Security, International Food and Agribusiness Management Review; Applied Economic Letters, Journal of Economic Policy Reforms, China Agricultural Economic Review, Economic Change and Restructuring, International Journal of Educational Management, Financial Innovation, Energy Reports, Contemporary Economics, and International Journal of Finance and Economics. He has also reviewed a book for Oxford University Press. Abbas has been awarded a number of prestigious awards like the Fulbright Research Fellowship 2015-16, the Volkswagen foundation ‘Our Common Future Fellowship’ for Global Health in 2010, and the Carlo Schmidt Fellowship (2009) for working with World Health Organization (WHO), Geneva, Switzerland. Recently, he has been awarded with prestigious “Alexander von Humboldt Foundation experienced researcher Fellowship” for the year 2017-18. In this scholarship he will research on issues related to malnutrition, gender violence and women and child health in Pakistan.
