OSCE and OSPE


The discussion topic for the month of October 08 started in a mystery. All the three moderators for the month went missing- Manjit, Rahman and Bhatti. Praveen and Suman Singh opted to moderate the discussion with Dr Tejinder Singh’s permission.


It began with introduction to the topic by Praveen and Suman. Discussion picked up very fast with great inputs from Dr Tejinder Singh and Anshu with involvement of almost all the fellows except Manjit Mohi, S Zia Rehman and Suman Gadicherla.


We first tried to understand the basics of OSCE and OSPE by reading the chapter on evaluation of practical skills which included a good account on OSCE in a book “Better Pediatric Education – a guide to teaching and learning” by Dr Tejinder Singh, Dr Madhav V Nath, Dr Dalgit Singh and Dr Vinod K Paul published by Indian Academy of Pediatrics, Education Centre.


After acquiring some basic understanding of the subject, let us now see how important concepts of OSCE/OSPE were drawn, discussed, dissected and ultimately digested by the fellows with the inputs from faculty.

Planning for the discussion month was as follows:

Step one:

  • Define and understand terms like OSCE,OSPE,COSPE,GOSPE, OSLER etc.
  • Understand the need to switch over to this system of evaluation from the traditional one.
  • Discuss are the attributes of OSCE/OSPE.

Step two:

  • Understand the logistics to plan and conduct OSCE/OSPE.
  • Discuss the competencies in evaluation system along with the ways to evaluate them through OSCE/OSPE.
  • Share your personal experiences with OSCE/OSPE.

Step three:

  • Plan your own stations and get them analysed.
  • Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of OSCE/OSPE. 

Step four:

  • Final summary and conclusions
