For any teaching learning process the most important aspect is evaluation which can put a stamp of approval or disapproval on the whole process. Evaluation tools help to identify areas of weakness or strength. They are very important in our efforts to correct or develop a particular aspect of learning so as to become a competent doctor or a professional.
We try to evaluate our students by a number of ways and the most commonly used ones include written examination for assessment of knowledge part and practical for the skill components. Usually a mixture of tests is used to make the evaluation as fair as possible.

What constitutes an ideal evaluation method is a question that still remains unanswered. We define an ideal test that is reliable, valid and feasible.

It is a well accepted fact that practical examination conducted in a conventional manner is far from fitting in the definition of an ideal test.  It suffers from many limitations. The most important limitation being faced is that of subjectivity on the part of examiner along with the inability to elaborate on the components that have been evaluated as the whole process of conducting examination is unstructured. Assessments drive learning but when assessment methods adopted needs to be assessed, all efforts of teaching and learning go futile. And thus a need was felt to modify our methods of evaluation and in that effort OSCE/OSPE was born.
