A place for emerging arts-based therapists to grow
with support from experienced practitioners

Description

Pilot Group (4 months trial).
2 hour meeting, monthly on Sundays.
Emerging Arts-based therapists’ skills development group.

Group will include some skill share components including being led or leading an arts-based group activity for the purpose of teaching the technique and practicing facilitation.

  • Group will serve as a means of work-shopping new ideas for new therapists and a learning tool regarding using various modalities for other therapists.

  • There will be time to discuss some clinical issues and concerns therapists may be having but cannot serve as the only supervision a practicing therapist will be engaged in.

  • Practicing therapists who participate will be required to have individual supervision with Samantha or Kathleen or another supervisor.

  • Samantha and Kathleen will co-facilitate the group.They will likely take turns facilitating but both could potentially facilitate together if enrollment is sufficient.

  • 12 participants for pilot project.

  • Fee $20 + HST/session (some sliding scale may be available).

    To qualify you must be:

    newly graduated from an arts-based training program or

    an emerging arts-based therapist who has graduated form an arts-based training program

    The group is tailor made for those:

    planning to open private practice
    who have recently started their private practice
    planning to use expressive arts in entrepreneurial manner
    who have recently started an entrepreneurial business using expressive arts
    job searching for organization/clinic position as an arts-based therapist.
    At the start of a position as a practicing therapist with an organization/clinic

Location of sessions:

Bloorcourt Therapy (Bloor West between Christie and Ossington Subway) or
Kathleen’s studio (Roncesvalles/High Park)

Cost:

  • 4-month trial period,

  • $90.40 total for 4 sessions (this amount includes HST)

  • People will have to commit to all 4 sessions. Sorry missed sessions will not be credited

Biographies of Facilitators:

Samantha Sherer EAT, OACCPP Cert.
Samantha Sherer is an Expressive Arts Therapist and a Certified Counsellor, practicing in Toronto since 2002. She helps people get out of their ruts and feel better so that they can live the life they want. She currently offers Arts- Based Psychotherapy, talk therapy and counselling to youth and adults in one-on-one, couples and group situations. Her credentials include an Expressive Arts Therapy Diploma from ISIS-Canada, a Bachelor of Fine Arts (NSCAD), she is certified in the areas of Counselling & Psychotherapy by the OACCPP, a member of NEDIC and she collaborates with agencies such as Sheena's Place, Women & Trans People's agencies and Family Service Toronto. Samantha has been a working artist and potter since 1994 and continues to explore visual media and writing. She is grateful to have the opportunity to share her experience in a wide scope of international development projects in Latin America and Asia.

Kathleen Rea M.A., OACCPP Cert.
Kathleen Rea is a certified psychotherapist with the OACCPP. She earned a diploma in expressive arts therapy from ISIS-Canada, a certificate in psychology from Ryerson University and a master's degree in expressive arts therapy with a minor in psychology from the European Graduate School. A practicing therapist for the past twelve years, she is also a therapeutic performance facilitator, helping people express their life stories through multidisciplinary performance. Kathleen has taught dance therapy, dance improvisation, and contact dance at York University, George Brown College, and Niagara College. She also founded and runs the Wednesday Dance Jam. Kathleen has choreographed over forty works for her company Reason d’etre dance productions and for other organizations. Her award winning dance film Lapinthrope aired on Bravo Television and screened at numerous international festivals. Her production Long Live was nominated for three Dora Mavor Moore awards, including outstanding choreography. In 2010, Kathleen was co-winner of the K. M. Hunter Dance Award.
