AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTS AND PROCESSED PRODUCTS

Fueled by steady growth in recent years and opportunities arising during Vietnam's accession to the World Trade Organization, the country's farm product export will, in 2007, gain encouraging results, including export turnovers of US$7.4-7.5 billion, according to its Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. The international farm product market may experience some fluctuations in the year, but Vietnam's key items such as rice, coffee, rubber, cashew nuts, pepper and woodwork will keep on penetrating deeply into foreign markets.

Vietnam has targeted to export US$7.4 billion worth of farm products in 2007, up nearly 2.8 per cent against 2006, according to sources from the ministry. By the end of this year, the acreage of rice, rubber, coffee, cashew, and tea will stand at 7.2 million hectares, 520,000 hectares, 490,000 hectares, 370,000 hectares and 123,000 hectares, respectively.

COFFEE: Vietnam is forecast to export 910,000 tonnes of coffee worth roughly US$1.3 billion in 2007, up 1.4 per cent in volume and nearly 18.2 per cent in value due to higher world prices. The country made coffee export turnovers of US$695 million in the first three months of this year, recording a year-on-year surge of 133.6 per cent, according to the statistics office. Meanwhile, it shipped abroad 482,000 tonnes of coffee, mainly to the European Union, the United States, Japan and Singapore, up 83 per cent.

RUBBER: Vietnam, the world's 4th biggest natural rubber exporter, is estimated to gain nearly US$1.4 billion from selling 830,000 tonnes of rubber overseas in 2007, up from nearly US$1.3 billion and 697,000 tonnes in 2006. Its main markets include China, South Korea, Japan, Germany and the United States.

CASHEW NUTS: Vietnam has eyed cashew export revenues of US$700 million this year, up over 38.6 per cent against last year, according to sources from the Vietnam Cashew Association. The country, gaining US$505 million from exporting 127,000 tonnes of cashew nuts, mainly to China, the United States, the Netherlands, Australia, Canada, England and Russia, in 2006, shipped abroad 27,000 tonnes of the nuts worth US$107 million.

Vietnam country, home to 350,000 hectares of cashew trees in 2005, plans to increase its cashew acreage to 450,000 hectares in 2010. Vietnam and India, two of the world's three biggest cashew exporters, have formed an alliance to promote global indirect consumption of cashew nuts, such as ingredient in candies, baked confectioneries, and other foodstuffs.

The alliance between the Vietnam Cashew Association and India's Cashew Export Promotion Council of India has invited the Association of the Cashew Producers of Brazil, the third leading cashew producer, to join the alliance by April 30

PEPPER: Vietnam, the world's biggest pepper exporter, shipped abroad, mostly to the European Union, the United States, Russia, China, Japan and Singapore, a total of 18,000 tonnes of pepper valued at US$45 million in the first quarter of this year, down 38.5 per cent in volume but up 7.8 per cent in value, according to the statistics office.

It is expected to export 150,000 tonnes of the goods worth US$ 300 million in 2010, up from 116,000 tonnes totaling US$ 2,500 million in 2006, according to Vietnam Pepper Association.

Average export price of local pepper is likely to increase to US$2,500 per tonne this year from US$ 1,638 last year. Vietnam currently has some 52,500 hectares of pepper, including nearly 13,500 hectares in the southern province of Binh Phuoc.
