The project "A Study in Explanatory Power" is pleased to announce its fellowship program. Starting in 2014, usually one, possibly up to two fellowships will be awarded every year. Proposals on any topic in the epistemology of explanations and understanding, broadly construed, are welcome. The topic may be explored from a philosophy of science perspective, but researchers with a background in metaphysics or the philosophy of language are equally welcome. If you are interested in joining the group without applying for one of the fellowships, we will be glad to assist you planning your stay. Guests will usually be provided with an office space and they will be granted access to the library. In some cases, costs for transportation may be covered. Please contact us in advance to check.
We will also be glad to assist you in applying for external funding.
How to apply:Applications should include a short research plan (up to three pages) and a short CV. Please indicate when you wish to stay in Essen. Each application is reviewed, and applications are judged on the quality and the relevance of the proposal to the project, as well as the applicant's academic achievements. The deadline for applications is January, 15th 2014 (for applications for the period between 4/2014 and 3/2015). Applicants will be informed by the end of January. Please indicate whether or not you are applying for a fellowship (there is no deadline for fellowship-independent proposals).
When to come
There are no constraints on when fellows may join the group. However, applicants might want to consider two points, that may be relevant:
Winter Semester in Germany starts in mid-October, Summer Semester in April (about 4 months each).
Moreover, the project hosts workshops in the "Explanatory Power"-series every year in Spring or Summer (details will be advertised at least six months in advance).

Living in Essen
The department of philosophy at the University of Essen is a young, growing department. Essen is a city in the Ruhr-Area; other universities in Bochum, Düsseldorf, Cologne and Münster, all of which host philosophy departments with strong research in theoretical philosophy, can be reached within one hour.
