OCBs = Extra Credit

If you are not sure what an OCB is, it stands for Organizational Citizenship Behaviors. It’s a fairly simply concept. It basically means going above and beyond in a helpful way that benefits the organization (our class) and contributes to effectiveness.

How to Get Your Extra Credit

  • Document your OCB's completed for this course. (Those for which I already gave you some additional points on another assignment should not be separately reported here.) Then turn in your documentation using the OCB Documentation Dropbox.
  • Points Possible: For each OCB documented you can receive Extra Credit - up to 8 EC points total. (This can count for up to 10% of your Participation grade - and the Participation category points can overflow to influence your final grade... if you just choose to over-perform like a boss.)

Class OCB Ideas

Here are a few ideas of things you could do that would count as OCB's for this class. If you need more ideas be sure to review Spector's OCB Checklist - it's linked in the 'What is an OCB?' section of this page.
  • Creating a version of Spector's checklist which focuses on how a class is an organization and gives examples of future course OCB's for other students to use
  • Creating a digital calendar file for the class that other students can use.
  • Organizing and leading a Reading Group to lower the individual burdens on all students involved
  • Organizing and leading a Writing Group to help everyone get extra credit on your papers

Paper OCB Ideas

You’ll receive extra credit if you turn in proof* with your paper of...
  • Reviewing a classmate’s paper and providing constructive criticism OR
  • That you had your paper reviewed by someone in the Think Tank and that you addressed mistakes or issues they pointed out in your final draft.
*Proof can be screenshots of Think Tank tutoring sessions you attended, or a draft with Tracked Changes, or a link to a Google Document that I can view which you worked on with someone else, etc. It just has to document the process.

Why OCB's?

In classes one of the things I see a lot as a professor is that many of you develop a relationship with me, but not so much one with each other. That's such a lost opportunity, especially when you're studying leadership, which by it's very nature requires people to act as a group or team. So that's why this is the method to gain extra credit in this class - I want to encourage you to make your classes more of a learning community, a bit more like they would be in the workplace (when you are all pursuing parallel purposes in a shared space), etc. Anything you can come up with which seems to work as an OCB you can turn in for points.

  • You can review an extensive Organizational Citizenship Behavior Checklist used by top researchers in this area to measure these behaviors in the workplace at Dr. Paul E. Spector’s website. While you don’t need to read the entire rationale/science-y scale part, unless you love organizational research like I do, the checklist items themselves will help you figure out what could be considered an OCB for our class.

Participation Discussion OCBs

  • +2 = If I am deeply impressed by your work or if you do something that could be considered an Organizational Citizenship Behavior you may garner additional points. In this case that could include providing helpful constructive criticism or commentary to other students (if that wasn't part of the assignment).
