Thoughts on Confession

Sir, During this period of fasting and penitence, here's some sobering food for thought: while the lines for communion grow longer, the queues for confession keep shrinking.

"Oh the fast-ebbing tide of Confession" (to be sung to the tune of "Where have all the flowers gone", composed and first sung by Pete Seeger in 1955. The song was also once listed as one of the 'Top 20 Political songs'.)

The Penitents' refrain:

"Where have all the confessionals gone

Long time passing

Where have all the confessors gone

Long time ago

Reduce gender bias

Sir, India estimates 21 million of its girls are unwanted. The desire among indian parents for sons instead of daughters has created 21 million unwanted girls, estimates a goverment report, according to BBC News. The Finance Ministry report found many couples kept on having children in the hope of having a boy.

It's so tragic that in a poor country like India despite examples of the girl child having progressed to heights unimaginable (e.g Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, Speakers in Parliament, CEOs of MNCs, Leaders of industries, highly paid models, Film actresses etc.), this clamour for the male child still persists.

Women's role in society

Sir, The excellent cover page of The Examiner dated March 03-09 depicts the various fields that our women could get involved, while playing an important part to "Push the Pace of Progress." By these words, we cannot but accept the role of a woman when it comes to going forward. She is the one who gives life to a life. No creature but a woman can give you everything from love to respect to strength. And the best thing about a woman is she does everything without expecting anything in return. It is really essential that we encourage her to showcase her extraordinary magical strength and help her nurture that power. International Women's Day is one of those occasions that give an opportunity to celebrate the valour of women and their inner strength. Like many other countries, India also celebrate Women's Day with fervour and zeal.

China's One-Child Policy

Sir, Decades of government-enforced population control have left China with significant gender and age imbalances, resulting in far-reaching societal effects. This legacy includes a rise in sex-trafficking and elderly suicides, according to Chinese pro-life advocate, Reggie Little john, president of the Women's Rights Without Frontiers! This is a dire warning for India too.

"There are an estimated 37 million more males living in China than females, leading to women and girls becoming forced brides and even prostitutes – a result of sex-selection abortions of female foetuses, and neglect of girls in infancy."

"The suicide rate for the over - 65 age group in China is four to five times higher than in the general population. Elderly widows have nobody to support them, and are leading lives of grinding poverty and hopelessness. They are exceedingly grateful for the help we are giving them through a monthly stipend for a year."

Which Bible version?

Sir, Catholic priests and elders rightly encourage the personal reading of the Bible, but sadly do little or nothing to do so with caution. I use this phrase "with caution" from the new discipline of the Church that does not put books on the now infamous Index, but advises they should be read with caution. The Church acknowledges that man has free will and has adequate knowledge and intellectual ability to discern between right and wrong. The same acknowledgment assigns responsibility to the individual to make the judgment. This is the modern interpretation of the judgment of the man who buried his single talent.

It is most unfortunate that even conscientious priests do not advise those who indiscriminately use the internet to download and use prayers and paraliturgical services from the Internet. I witnessed a skit in which a priest played the part of Jesus and whipped the Pharisees and Sadducees out of the Temple! I am sure the audience was aware that it was traders and money-changers who were evicted angrily for desecrating the House of God!
