Reduce, Reuse, Recycle

Padma Bhushan awarded to bishop

Sir, This refers to "Padma awards: Kerala bishop who desired the life of a porter" (Examiner dated Feb 03-09). It is remarkable to know that Bishop Philipose was conferred the Padma Bhushan award by the government. What is more striking is that the Bishop desired the life of a porter, and keeps himself busy by effortlessly mingling with the youth, and has been active in social life. This translates into what he loved and preferred being with the poor, and not to be seen too much by being with the rich. This also brings into focus of what Jesus spoke:

Deacons serving the Church

Sir, The article 'Waiting on the Lord' by Deacon Sylvester Lobo which was published in The Examiner dated December 9, 2017 was interesting. He gave an insight on how the Deacons are at the service of the community and the Institutions. He has also stated who could join the Diaconate — the ones who are financially self-reliant, graduate unmarried men above the age of 25, and married men above the age of 35, with the written consent of their wives.

The vision of late Ivan Cardinal Dias, who began the Permanent diaconate in the Archdiocese in the year 2006, was carried on well by Oswald Cardinal Gracias. The Archdiocese has 17 persons who have been ordained permanent Deacons. Another six candidates are in formation. May God bless them and their families, as they continue to sacrifice and serve the Church and its people with all humility. The parishes where these Deacons are appointed have been gaining from their personal experience and inputs regularly on weekends, and they are also available as resource persons for various activities carried out in these parishes.

'Box intentions' - a review

Sir, Cardinal Oswald Gracias' directive on 'box intentions ' for Masses, is very commendable. As per the directive, people may put their Mass intention in a box to be placed near the altar. Once a week, a mass is to be celebrated for all the intentions placed in the box. People may put 'any amount' of money in the box for the Mass intention, which again is very innovative. (People should give according to their means, the rich giving a lot more than the poor.)

Church combats Euthanasia!

Sir, On January 26, 2018, Pope Francis met with members of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, while affirming the dignity of every person, and stressing the Church's task of accompanying the ill and suffering, especially in the face of increasing support for 'euthanasia'!

"Pain, suffering, and the meaning of life and death, are all problems the contemporary mind does not know how to face with hope; and therefore, this is one of the duties that the Church is called to render to present-day humanity."

"It is clear, that where life is not valid and valued for its dignity, but for its efficiency and productivity, 'euthanasia' becomes inevitable. In such a scenario, it must be reiterated, that human life from conception to its natural end has a 'dignity' that shows it as inviolable."

Congratulations, Team India, for a job well done

Sir, The young Indian under-19 cricket team brought laurels to the country by winning the World Cricket Cup. They made India proud. The captain, Pritvi Shaw, led by example and showed courage and determination. He was always in control of the game, and did not give much room to the opposition.

When Shaw was a youngster, he used to travel from Virar to MIG, Bandra for practice sessions, until a Shiv Sena MP, seeing his potential, gave him his flat at Vakola to ease his travel time. This was indeed a noble deed.
