Fire safety steps

Sir, The year 2017 ended on a sad note in the wake of the 1Above restaurant fire. The major reason for this tragedy is that fire safety guidelines were not followed, preventive/precautionary measures were not in place and storing of combustible articles, due to which the fire spread very quickly.

The preventive measures that can be taken are:

1. Multiple emergency exits in hotels and restaurants in case of a fire, so that suffocation due to poisonous gas/smoke can be avoided.

2. Fire extinguishers should be placed at multiple and prominent places in hotels, restaurants, malls and their premises should be fire-compliant.

"Went to church?"

Sir, On Sundays, the usual greeting among friends is: "Went to church?" The question is not intended to elicit a reply, but is simply an alternative to the usual "Hi, how are you?" to which one replies "Good, good" - even if one isn't feeling so good. Similarly "Went to church?" usually gets a "Yes" reply, whether or not one has been to church.

And so, on a fine Sunday morning, Peter greeted his friend Paul with the Sunday special: "Went to church?" little expecting what was to follow. "No," replied Paul, "Did you?" "Yes," muttered Peter, a little taken aback. "And what was the first reading about?" asked Paul. "Well, I can't recall the first reading," admitted Peter rather sheepishly. "No problem. What was the second reading about?" asked Paul, to which Peter reluctantly offered the same reply. "At least you can tell me a little about the Gospel reading," said Paul. "Honestly, I can't remember," admitted Peter. "Then why did you go to church?" asked Paul. Peter had no answer.

“Devotion to the BVM is an obligation in the life of a Christian. In fact, it is not just a spiritual etiquette, but it is a must! Because the gift of a mother or woman is most precious to the Church. All of us need a mother’s heart, one which knows how to keep the tender love of God; and to feel the heartbeat of all around us.”

India’s Mental epidemic!

Sir, On Sunday December 31, 2017, Times News Network reported that our President, Ram Nath Kovind, spoke at the 22nd convocation of the National Institute of Mental Health And Neurosciences (NIMHANs), Bangalore:

“India is facing a ‘mental health epidemic’, and needs to ensure that patients have access to proper and timely treatment. There is a shortage of mental health professionals, as there are only about 5,000 psychiatrists and less than 2,000 clinical psychologists; which are very small even for the mental illnesses which are affecting 10% of our youth.”

Diocesan Youth Singing Competition

Sir, The Diocesan Youth Singing Competition was held at St Andrew's Auditorium on January 7. The girls from St Catherine of Siena School regaled the audience in the foyer with a string of Christmas carols, till the doors opened.

There were five enthusiastic participating choirs. All of them were excellent and put forth the message of Christmas in song. Some had composed their own carols and others added pep to existing ones. The comperes were humourous, and held the audience's attention between choirs by getting everyone, old and young, to participate by clapping their hands and singing.

Baseline Tests - Class 3 to Class 9

Sir, The Baseline test is conducted from Class 3 to Class 9 for all students, irrespective of the Boards affiliated. The four Baseline tests conducted in a year are a sheer waste of time, energy and baseless. It does not add any concrete weightage or value to our students.
