Syro-Malabar Synod

A synod of the bishops of the Syro-Malabar Church got under way at the St Thomas’ Mount, Kakkanad, near Kochi on Jan. 8, inaugurated by Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Church, Cardinal George Alencherry. The session began with a meditation led by Archbishop Mathew Moolakkat of Kottayam. 59 bishops are participating in the Synod, which will end on January 13.


Researcher Fr Nascimento dies

Fr Nascimento J Mascarenhas, 77, an avid researcher of Church history, died at the priests’ residence at Holy Spirit Church, Margao, on Jan. 7. A diabetic, he was bedridden for around a month before his death.

Mascarenhas was a researcher, historian and author of over ten books, and documented priests from Goa Archdiocese living in Portugal. He also presented the profiles of diocesan clergy from the talukas of Bardez and Ilhas (Tiswadi) in two parts of Unum Presbyterium (One Priesthood). He was racing against time trying to finish one of his final projects on the diocesan priests from Salcete.


Catholic schools attacked

“It is really sad that whilst the Church is committed to the development of society, Catholic educational institutions are being targeted to sully our image,” said Fr Thomas Philip, head of the Manav Vikas Seva Sangh, the human development body of the Diocese of Sagar (Madhya Pradesh).

Fr Biju spoke to AsiaNews about the case of St Mary’s Post Graduate College in Vidisha. For days, the school has been the target of an intimidation campaign by Hindu extremists, who want to conduct a Hindu ritual inside its premises, and are threatening serious consequences if they are prevented.


Govt assures right to worship at Kurisumala

The Latin Catholic Church has deferred its proposed strike after the Kerala government assured the clergy that the believers’ freedom to worship at Kurisumala, a controversial pilgrimage centre, will be protected. The decision comes after Archbishop M Soosa Pakiam held talks with Forest Minister K Raju.


Biggest diocese in India

The Syro-Malabar Catholic Church marked a historic moment with the inauguration of the Shamshabad Diocese on Jan. 7 with pan-India jurisdiction, excluding the existing 30 dioceses which the Latin Church had taken over in 1886.

The diocese has jurisdiction over all the Syro-Malabar Christians in 23 states and two Union territories, excluding those in Kerala, Tamil Nadu and in the jurisdictions of the Kalyan and Faridabad dioceses, making it the largest in the country.


25 years of Don Bosco Nepal

A college community radio in Darjeeling Hills plans to set out on a historic ‘Indo-Nepal Friendship Tour’ with a team of Radio Journalists visiting seven institutions in Nepal managed by alumni of Salesian College, Sonada (SCS) to mark its 80th year celebrations, as well as the 25th year of Don Bosco Society in Nepal. The road show also marks the first anniversary of Radio Salesian - first college radio in Bengal and entire northeast India. The tour was scheduled to start from January 7, from Sonada, passing through Indo-Nepal Kakrabitta border near Siliguri, and proceed to Dharan from where Don Bosco Centre, Nepal started, and reach Kathmandu in West Nepal.
