EWB invites you to spend an evening learning about stress relief methods while playing with your very own non-newtonian fluid.  Mentors and mentees alike can come to share study tips and efficient stress relief idea while mixing up a colorful batch of relaxing puttiness! In order to support our ongoing efforts to create worldwide sustainable projects, the Los Angeles Professional Chapter of Engineers Without Borders invites you to our 6th Annual Fundraising Gala, onSaturday, April 26th 7:00 PM - 11:00 PMat Kesspro StudiosIf you are interested in attending, you must email Niru Senthilkumar at nkumar11393@gmail.com, especially for transport coordination. 

Please join us for a night of live music, presentations of our current projects, and socializing with local professionals. We will also be having a silent auction of artisan crafts obtained from our trips and a raffle at the end of the night for some locally sourced gifts.

Tickets purchased in advance are $30 for students (with ID). Admission prices include: one raffle ticket, hors d’oeuvres to satisfy your hunger, and an open bar to facilitate socializing (for those of you over 21).

Nourishment International: Build a Green House!

Nourishment International-UCLA is looking for any student interested in helping with a new greenhouse design to be built in Antigua, Guatemala this summer during an 8 week trip. This opportunity offers leadership mentors and a network of students and alumni from 45 different universities with similar project experience. Spanish speaking is a plus. Habitat UCLA Shanty Town

Every year, Habitat for Humanity has an Act! Speak! Build! Week, an advocacy week where we raise awareness about housing poverty and Habitat though a week full of fun activities and events.

One of the events we're having this year is called Shanty Town, where groups build houses in Wilson Plaza out of extremely basic materials, including cardboard boxes, in order to emulate and understand the conditions in which much of the world's population lives. Afterwords, the groups are free to paint and decorate their houses, to be displayed for the rest of the day and entered in a competition to see who can build the best shanty house!

We would love to have you guys at Shanty Town! This is a great way to get your name out on campus as well connect with other humanitarian student organizations. Shanty Town is on the Monday of 4th Week of Spring Quarter, April 21st, at 10am-2pm.

More information to come from EWB UCLA as details are finalized. 

TBP's 74th Annual Engineering Games

This quarter, instead of the typical trivia based Engineering Bowl, TBP will be hosting the first ever Engineering Games. This event is a re-creation of the Hunger Games in real life, involving riddles, puzzles, and nerf guns.The Games will commence Saturday, April 26th at 1:30 pm in the Sculpture Garden in North Campus. EWB UCLA Nomination and Election

During this week's General Meeting, we will be asking for nominations for all officer positions for the coming academic year. If you want to get more involved with EWBUCLA, this is a great opportunity of involvement. Come to the meeting and let your voices be heard. On a further note, all positions are divided into two categories, to be voted on in two rounds respectively. The first round positions will be elected during Week 2 and the second round's application is due by Week 3. Round 2 officers will be selected by interviews, not by vote. More information about the categories and election can be found here

Engineers' Week is a week of celebration for the UCLA Engineering Community hosted by ESUC. It is a way to gather all of our skills to be put on display! SoCal Solar Aggregation Opportunity

SoCal Solar Aggregation 1 is facilitating a first-of-its-kind aggregation to bring solar energy to 400 select buildings in Southern CA.  SoCal Solar Aggregation 1 is an initiative with the AVATAR Alliance Foundation, a nonprofit corporation formed in 2010 by Academy Award-winner James Cameron.  We are seeking interns in UCLA's MBA and/or Sustainability/Environmental Graduate and undergraduate programs to perform the following work:
 
1) Solar Analysis modeling (in excel) for the 400 buildings that will participate in our aggregation, and
 
2) Marketing (helping create a solar presentation that will be shown at an event in May/June to hundreds of building owners interested in going solar)
 
Inters will gain significant insight into the economics of rooftop solar energy in Southern CA, and will be exposed to a deal structure that is a first-of-its kind.  Interns will also have the opportunity to learn about all the other aspects of solar development.

MWD Expo - Student Projects Wanted

 The Metropolitan Water District (MWD) extends an invitation to you to participate in MWD's 7th Annual Spring Green Expo (May 1st, 2014). MWD is seeking student projects for their ECO Innovator's Showcase, which displays design, technology and engineering concepts that promote environmental sustainability. 

Students may enter a competition judged by MWD employees. For more information about the competition and the event, please visit here

Environmental Engineering Opportunity

The following is courtesy of Trihydro, an environmental consulting firm: 

Environmental Engineer (entry) - Signal Hill, CA

Applicants must have a BS in Chemical, Civil, or Environmental Engineering. Applicants with a 40-hour OSHA HAZWOPER certification and aspirations to obtain a professional engineer (PE) certification in CA are preferred.  Duties will include performing environmental sampling, environmental remediation system operation and maintenance, system design; remedial measures evaluation, preparation of engineering plans and specifications, construction and system operation oversight, data management and interpretation, technical report preparation, and project management assistance.  Excellent teamwork, technical writing, verbal communication, and Microsoft Office computer skills are required.  Applicants must have a clean driving record and a demonstrated commitment to safe operations.

Renewable Energy Club

The Renewable Energy Club (REC) at UCLA strives to cultivate an understanding of the importance of renewable energy sources, such as solar, wind, geothermal, hydroelectric, and biofuel, etc., and their effects on our environment, economy, and society. We use an interdisciplinary approach, by connecting both undergraduates and graduates of varying fields of interest at UCLA. This will be done by working on energy-related projects, networking, and showcasing sustainable and efficient environment solutions to the University and the Greater Los Angeles area. In addition, we will have speaker presentations, conferences, networking events, and opportunities to give members hands-on experience with different renewable energy technologies. Rube Goldberg Competition

Have you ever dreamed of building big and awesome Rube Goldberg machines? (For those who have lived in cave, here is your inspiration)

TBP is hosting the 4th Annual Rube Goldberg Competition this quarter, on March 1st 2014 at SAC Gym. Teams of 5-8 students will compete to build and test a Rube Goldberg (RG) competition in 4 hours. TBP will provide all materials and tools. This year's competition theme is "Movies!" So feel free and creative to express your favorite movies in your Rube Goldberg machines.
Sign up by the end of this week to be part of an EWB team here. Team deposits will be fully refunded by EWB UCLA. 

Winners will get great prizes accordingly: 1st Place - $200, 2nd - $100, 3rd - $50, Fans' Favorite - $50

Saturday Hike to Temescal Canyon 

When: Saturday morning (3/1) from 10:45am2:00pm

Where: Meet at the metro stop at Gayley/Strathmore (for bus-ers) at 10:30 for bus that leaves at 10:50!

Get ready to for a light hike through the wilderness with your fellow EWBers Eighth Week Saturday. Don't forget to wear comfy shoes, bring a picnic lunch, sunscreen & water, and $3 for the metro. This is a great opportunity to get to know other project members, learn more about other projects, and just relax with all of EWB outside of 38-138! Sign up for the hike here.

BGreen Consulting - 5th Annual Green Jobs Fair

BGreen Consulting, UCLA's environmental consulting organization is hosting its annual Green Jobs Fair.

This Wednesday (2/19/2014) at Ackerman Grandball room from 10 AM  - 1 PM, companies ranging from environmental NGO to green energy companies will arrive at Ackerman to recruit for both full time employees and interns.

Dress code is business casual (strictly enforced) and do remember to bring your resumes for the recruiters. More information can be found on the FB page here. No RSVP required for the event.

On next week Thursday (6th Week,February 13th) at 3 PM, come to Bruin Plaza for a one hour plant tour of UCLA's very own cogeneration plant. Providing electricity, heat and chilled water, the cogen plant is an integral but unnoticeable part of UCLA. Join EWB UCLA as we unveil the veil of mystery that surrounds the building. EMCC is an after-school education outreach program that Tau Beta Pi provides for 4th and 5th graders at Nora Sterry Elementary School. The goal of EMCC is to expose these young schoolchildren to math and sciences at an early age, cultivating an interest in these subjects and preparing a foundation for future careers in engineering and the sciences. EMCC sessions will be on Thursdays from 2:30 pm - 5 pmthrough 8th week. We will meet between Boelter, Eng IV, and Eng V. If you are interested in helping out or have any questions, please email megweber@gmail.com.
